Fantasy Fiction with a Twist

The Elf Gift is a fast paced, detailed and well drawn story set in Ireland during the potato famine, and across the globe during modern times. It is a fantastic and fun read with two sets of protagonists, interwoven through an accessible mythology that explains key motivations, as well as plot points, during the main story.

[SPOILER ALERT]

The first third of the book is set in Ireland at the beginning of the potato famine. A young farmhand, moves to an English household as a servant, but is challenged by the owners of the house before the famine itself intervenes and creates a dangerous situation in which the young man, and the rest of the house, must flee.

The second two thirds of the book flash forwards to San Francisco where unusual events interrupt the lives of the two main protagonists. Soon, they are travelling across the globe and are challenged to fulfill destiny and save the earth from being engulfed in chaos.

If you enjoy fantasy fiction, with an accessible mythology, give this book a shot. It's quick and fun read!

Elf Gift started a little slow for me in that the description was a bit heavy. However, after about 10 pages or so it really picked up. The plot was moving swiftly and I started caring about the characters. Such a breathtaking finish to part one and you start all over again with the next section guiding you into caring about these new players and wondering how in the world it all fits. Hated to see Part 1 end, but really enjoyed the developments in part 2...couldn't put the book down, I had to know what was going to happen next. Elf Gift gives you a thrill ride. An imaginative story that is well crafted as it discloses how it all fits...and I did not see that end coming. Already recommended to several friends.

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this book. I picked it up yesterday and couldn't put it down. Loved it. Read it in a day. I had no idea what it was going to be about or what to expect. I was mesmerized.
To me, it was kind of a cross of Downton Abbey meets DaVinci Code, meets Celestine Prophecy, with a hint of Anne Rice (all my favorites!). The rich use of historical context and content is fascinating (always a reason I loved Anne Rice).
I have to confess I was almost angry when it shifted gears in part 2. I felt so invested in part one I didn't want to leave those characters. Of course it all came together perfectly. What a movie this story would make. Hope it can find a screenwriter.

The author does a great job of bridging the time gap between the potato famine in Ireland and present day. It was a real page turner and I think I finished it in a couple of sittings.
