Not just Saturday Night Live-movie good, when the movie has some funny bits but is basically an insult to humanity; Elf is a smartly written, skillfully directed, and deftly acted story of a human being adopted by Christmas elves who returns to the human world to find his father. And because the writing, directing, and acting are all genuinely good, Elf is also genuinely funny. Will Ferrell, as Buddy the adopted elf, is hysterically sincere. James Caan, as his rediscovered father, executes his surly dumbfoundedness with perfect aplomb. Zooey Deschanel, as a department store worker with whom Buddy falls in love, is adorably sardonic. Director Jon Favreau (Swingers) shepherds the movie through all the obligatory Christmas cliches and focuses on material that's sometimes subtle and consistently surprising. The appearance of the inside cover is different than the pics shown here, which is just the slip case. What I received looks like it's just the 4K disc version, with no Movies Anywhere digital symbol or mention of disc count on the front or back, so I initially thought it wasn't what I ordered. Happy to say it's just missing the slip case, and all 3 formats are inside including a working digital code. Great deal.

My favorite christmas movie of all time. And its aging just fine. Do you ever go back and watch an old movie and you almost can't believe it used to be one of your favorites? That isn't the case with Elf. We still watch it every year at least once in December.

Bob Newhart is the second funniest character in here but this is Will Ferrell at his best. Not mean. Just extremely friendly and likable. This is such a great fish out of water story. We all have different favorite parts, but mine is still "Did you hear that?" If you haven't seen this, don't wait until Christmas, watch it now.
