The Elgato Cam Link is a fantastic device. I said the name of the device because sometimes Amazon shows reviews for similar but different products by the same company in the review section.

I've been wanting something like the Cam Link for a long time. I can even use this in Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps like the Camera app as well as Skype for Windows 10. If you want to record video, and you don't need any software bells or whistles, and you don't want to have to install something like Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) or Elgato's Game Capture software, the Windows 10 Camera app works beautifully with it. I still generally use OBS with it for recording because I record more than just the camera input.

I have a Sony A5100 camera that I've hooked to an Elgato HD60 Pro for well over a year now, and I had gotten so used to the video having a little bit of delay/latency on it, usually between 50-100 milliseconds, I got used to not being able to use it on any UWP app (Microsoft seems to have blocked the usage of such devices in UWP mode when they're an internal card and not a USB device), and I got used to having to use experimental drivers to let me use it in Skype for Desktop and Google Hangouts. With the Cam Link, I can use it on all of those things and more, and Windows 10 simply recognizes what to do with it immediately, I didn't have to install any drivers or special software.

With the Cam Link, there's no delay/latency. In fact, I've tested it using OBS against the internal recording of my A5100 camera in 60p 50m in XAVC-S format, and as long as I used a high bitrate setting in OBS, I couldn't tell the difference, and I'm quite a videophile. I'm incredibly impressed with this device.

I honestly couldn't be happier with this purchase. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has the equipment that can take advantage of what it can do. Seriously, I couldn't be happier with this purchase. Thank you Elgato for making a really great device.

Good and Driverless Alternative to Other Elgato Capture Cards

The Elgato Cam Link, while intended for cameras will work with video game consoles as well. While the Cam Link lacks HDMI output and mic input seen on the HD60S, the Cam Link will work without drivers. It's because the Cam Link sees itself as a UVC device, mostly seen in web cams.This opens up a wider compatibility with other applications that can capture web cam video input. Previously, only the Magewell and Epiphan's AV.io HD video gabber does this, but cost considerably more.

The Elgato Cam Link while works with the official software, it's not necessarily needed. The Cam Link will work with all the video capture application on macOS. This is important since most of the video capture cards do not work on macOS besides Blackmagic, Magewell and Epihan capture cards. Elgato, while work on macOS, you can only use their application to get the output. This means that if you use OBS or Gameshow on a Mac, you need to do a window capture, which can become troublesome. Since the Cam Link is seen as a web cam, it will work with these applications with a direct input without needing to do window capture.

On the other hand, the Cam Link like the HD60S requires a powerful computer since there is no hardware encoder. Any recent computer can handle this well along with laptops with quad cores. With dual cores however, you may have to reduce the resolution to 720p. Otherwise, it's a good and a little cheaper alternative to Elgato's HD 60S and HD 60 Pro, if you don't care about the HDMI output and mic input, Mac and Linux users or people who want wider compatibility for video capture

Update: If you use a Mac, you should probably install the Game Capture software from Elgato and run it. It will change it to “isochronus mode.” It is set to Bulk Mode, which is optimized for Windows systems. Afterwards, the video capture is smooth.

Finally gave in and bought the Elgato Cam Link to use as a gaming capture card after some hesitation (I'm frugal). So many other capture cards were half the price of Elgato's HD60, HD60S and Cam Link, but all claimed to do the same thing. After doing extensive research, I settled on this device. Multiple tech gurus pointed out flaws with all the devices (including Elgato's) but nevertheless I honestly still reached a point where I was tired of hearing the phrase "Elgato is the best" at the end of every video.

Since this is my first "capture card", I can't make a comparative statement, but what I will say is: The Elgato Cam Link exceeded my expectations and does everything I bought it for. Records gameplay and game audio flawlessly. For those who want to record your voice alongside the gameplay, there's obviously no Mic-in on the Cam Link, but I believe the Elgato software allows you to record an alternate audio input device. Since so many people are switching to USB mics (or XLR to USB preamps) anyway, it comes in handy for someone like myself who has no need for a 3.5mm-in slot.

I don't use a camera so I can't speak on using the Cam Link for its intended function. I only use it as a gameplay capture card. Just download the free Elgato software, plug the PS4 HDMI into the Cam Link, then plug Cam Link to a PC's USB 3.xx slot. Record game footage in 1080p60 at the click of a button. There's zero video lag if you use their software's preview function as your display, and it is also a perfect pass-through of the incoming resolution. I select "Enter Full Screen" (see photo) then "Hide Sidebar" and I don't even notice a difference from having my console plugged directly into the TV.

If you're like me and prefer NOT to save your captures locally, go to settings (see photo) and disable "Enable Flashback Recording". I think this will free up your SSD/HDD(?) from any work. You can stream directly to Twitch, YouTube & others (see photo) with the Elgato software. I use YouTube as free cloud storage for my personal gameplay videos (shhh don't tell Google or else they'll start charging) and this device made it easy to do so in the best quality.

My two complaints about this device (which have now both been fixed) were 1: The gameplay audio channels being reversed. 2: Audio lag.

After contacting elgato, I was instructed to do a firmware update which fixed the L/R audio swap. Hold "ctrl" while clicking the settings wheel in the "Device" section. Go to "Advanced" tab and click "Update Firmware".

To nullify audio lag: Listen directly to the recording device instead of computer's playback device. Right click the volume mixer in your Windows OS taskbar. Navigate to “Recording Devices” / “Digital Audio Interface 2- Cam Link”/Properties/ “Listen” Tab (see photo). Check the box next to “Listen to this device”. Select device you prefer to route to from drop-down menu. You should now hear lag-free game audio (pass-through).
Now mute the preview screen sound (the laggy audio) by clicking the speaker square BELOW the display screen in the Elgato software. (NOTE: Do not mute the “Game Audio” volume wheel on the RIGHT SIDE of the display window unless you want no game audio recorded.)

All in all, Elgato lived up to the hype and if they release a 4K version of the Cam Link I will most likely be buying it. I'd imagine it would be much bulkier and require an external power source though.

As for the CamLink Gameplay Capture Quality: Keep in mind my capture was streamed directly to YouTube. They slightly degrade the quality of uploads, whereas I've never had that issue with Twitch. It still looks like superior quality though.

Don't buy this if you don't understand its purpose and its limitations. OBS streamers might be better off with the Elgato HD 60S instead for example and professionals might want to invest in something with more features.

This is a UVC-type video device that acts like a very basic plug-and-play webcam. No frills, no features, and no settings. You'll still need a mini/micro HDMI cable, AC power adapter for your camera, a camera with clean HDMI output that supports 720p or 1080p, and a powerful computer with a dedicated USB 3.0 interface. You may also need a camera that has an audio-line-in port, to ensure the audio is in sync with any external microphone.

You can use this for console game capture or what not, but since there is no HDMI pass thru, it isn't ideal; you will require a HDMI splitter in that case.

The Cam Link is designed to work with applications other than OBS, such as Skype, Google Hangouts, and Discord. It claims to have ultra low latency, but for me with my Panasonic G85 there was 350 milliseconds of latency when measured from Camera to Screen -- twice the latency of a Logitech 1080p webcam. This is problematic because if you use a USB microphone, your lips will be out of sync with the audio when in a Skype call. When you're streaming 1080p60 video at a high bit rate, this lip-sync issue is pretty obvious, whereas with a normal webcam the low fps, high compression, and weak image quality masks any small amount of latency found there.

It is possible to add an audio delay in OBS, but it's quite a bit harder to do so in other applications. There aren't many products on the market that can do this well, so I can't fault Cam Link much. However, it is possible that if I was using a different camera and a faster computer the latency would be comparable to a webcam. My very old Panasonic camcorder actually doesn't seem to have the same high-latency problem, despite outputting the same signal.

Considering that this problem may be camera-specific, I'm giving the product a 4/5 stars, instead of a 3/5 stars. [Update: Going back to 3 stars after it failing to meet my needs professional on multiple occasions] My G85 meets the stated requirements, however the high latency I get with it makes this product is a bit useless and there isn't a lot of offered solutions. Others will just need to try and see I guess.

Pricing is quite competitive, so I'll look past the lack of features.

Update:
I was able to get my Panasonic G85 to output 720p30 video over HDMI, and thankfully, unlike with 1080p modes, the latency with the Cam Link @ 720p was equal to that of a logitech C920 -- ie: quite fast. 720p30 is frankly perfectly fine for my needs, although I won't be able to record at 4K and stream simultaneously in this mode.

I've also purchased an HDMI splitter to allow me to overcome that issue; the overall cost is still less then the competitors offerings [at the time], so that's something positive I suppose.

Video preview seems to keep up high frame rates even on slow computers
Very high quality bitrates possible; up to gigabits per second

Cons:
Doesn't work with USB 2.0 and problematic with USB 3.0 Hubs, especially if shared.
Can't change resolution or color space, with virtually no settings available
Used with some cameras this device will have higher latency than a normal webcam.
It isn't 4K; the competitors have had 1080p for years and have already released 4K options
No Audio input port, so audio sync issues can arise (there is HDMI audio however)
No HDMI pass thru so an HDMI splitter will be needed in some cases
No HDMI cable included; a HDMI to micro/mini HDMI adapter is likely a required extra purchase
USB cable included is very short, which means you'll probably want a longer than normal HDMI cable
Suggested High-end Computer System requirements, particularly if recording video
Sometimes freezes and needs to be re-plugged in.
High CPU requirement when using as a webcam with 1080p60

Update 2, months later.:
Latency seems to be quite dependent on the camera used, but combined with help from technical support and a different camera, I'm able to get latency down to something reasonable. My voice is still slightly out of sync with video, but that's only when I don't use the onboard camera's line-in. I do notice some slight color banding issues, but that likely is the HDMI out from the camera. I'm using an HDMI splitter to give me HDMI pass thru, which is a reasonable option in this case. I do have issues where the HDMI stream goes black, and I need to restart my recording software, where the stream works again - overall, getting things going can be a bit more finicky than with a webcam. Lastly, using this device over a browser for realtime chat, there is quite the hit to my GPU/CPU -- I suppose this is as a result of real-time downscaling from 1080p60 to 720p30 or what not. I'm happy with my purchase, but it took a lot of more fiddling and experimentation than I care for.

Update 3, nearly a year later:
I do like the Elgato Camlink, but at this point in time there seems to be better options available for less. I have one irritating issue that keeps me from recommending the CamLink professionally, and that is that is sometimes it FREEZES and stops outputting a signal. I need to unplug it and plug it back in to have it work again with OBS, but this is unacceptable if relying on it for live video. It also does not offer a MotionJPEG output or downscaler option, so this thing needs a lot of CPU performance to operate smoothly, AND it doesn't hurt to have a high quality USB 3.0 host and solid HDMI cable that won't wiggle around much. I am buying an alternative for the Elgato Camlink and will be using it for a B-camera only going forward.

As the product details given that it will support up to 1080 resolution, means it should support lower resolutions of 720, 480. but not showing the resolutions for input and only 1920x1080 showing as input. It is not expected as I am using Magewell XI100DUSB-HDMI HDMI to USB 3.0 USB Capture Dongle, it is supporting all the resolutions up to 1080. video quality also not satisfied compared to the devices already I am using. Packing is very good. The device looks also very impressive. Device size is very small, that can be carried in our pocket also. Sorry to say that Not satisfied with the performance. If any development or R&D is there with the manufacturers, I suggest improving the said drawbacks.

Have you ever wanted to have the world's most overkill webcam in the world? Well now you can. Really not a ton to say, it just works as you would expect: plug it in and you end up with a webcam device and audio-in device in Windows for the video and audio from your camera respectively. One odd thing is that it did not work correctly when I plugged it into a USB 3.1 port - but the USB 3.0 port worked fine. Don't know what's up with that.

Image quality is fantastic and you can use it with Elgato's streaming software if you're using this for Twitch.

Before deciding to buy this product, works with stadard game capture software, OBS, ect. Needs a hDMI splitter to get passthough, not a huge investment, video quality is dependant on your system, uses cpu to process image no onboard transcorder, so recomend i5, or i7 with a good gpu card and 8gig of memory. Works well for live streaming, and gives a good dslr image, contrast, and depth of field no infinite depth of field like standard webcam.

This device wasn't a reliable way to convert a DSLR to a webcam. The output would switch to a purple tint (but appear normal on the DSLR screen). We tried two Windows 10 computers and each crashed. Given the other reviews, our unit was probably defective. We returned it but didn't get a replacement. The build quality is poor given the price. When the Cam Link did work, the results weren't much better than using a Logitech Brio with the recently released Logitech Capture software.
