The first one is you must disable the DCHP settings on the PS4. Otherwise your screen will keep flashing "No signal." To do this you must do the following:
Go to [Settings] > [System] > UNCHECK [Enable DCHP] > Reset PS4
After that you're good to record, UNLESS, you plan on recording while you use a headset. If you do, you have to order a different cord that's not included with the package. This cord is known as the "Elgato Chat Link" cable which allows you to hear the chat/game sound in your headphones while also allowing the Elgato to pick it up as well. And IF you're using this Elgato, you also must buy a 3.5mm to RCA adapter as well as the cut link cable. All this JUST to record sound and chat with headphones.
Overall, very great product. Would be 5 stars if I didn't have to go through all the extra ordering OR if the package just came with the extra cords, but it doesn't.
The first was that I wanted to use it for pass-through. I thought I could use my laptop as a monitor to play game consoles using pass-through when I'm on the go. I've tried it with other, cheaper cards that ended up breaking, but up until they broke, they worked fine via passthrough. Quality's not so great, but that's to be expected. Bought this one, quality looks fine, but a 6-second delay in the input from the console to showing up on the screen means that this will NEVER be possible. They say it's because of the conversion from AV to HDMI though it worked just fine on the cheaper cards. No way to switch something off to where that delay isn't a thing. despite that I don't even need to buy an HD upscaler to use it with AV output. It's got its own hookups for that! I know upscaling can have a delay; that's why HDTVs have a game mode on them. It gets rid of the delay in exchange for some slightly less colorful but barely noticeable image changes. There's no way to get this to work via passthrough purely because of that tiny flaw.
I was okay with that though because I really bought it to capture VHS tapes. Seemed to work fine on the cheaper capture cards apart from the fact that there are no settings to sync up the input/output framerates and quality leading to a diminished image. I was happy to see that you can do that with this more expensive one. The problem? If the VHS tape you are using has ANY flickering in the slightest, the capture card stops receiving for a full 6 seconds and it does this CONSTANTLY. This makes it impossible to use to rip VHS tapes. There's absolutely no way to force it to record and just persistently capture what I need it to. I don't even record with the capture card; I use Bandicam once it's hooked onto my screen. It's also impossible to get it to stop showing the menu, so I can't show only the video once it's done being captured. And even then despite that the video is 60fps/720p and the settings are set to capture 60fps/720p, it still doesn't actually display 60fps.
I looked all over online for help with this and nobody has an answer. They're all saying get a different capture card. Not because this one is bad or anything; they can't explain why. But not only do I not have more money to spend on this, but this is my third capture card that I've tried and spending more money is only making the problem worse. I just want to rip basic, BASIC VHS home movies at the same framerate it was recorded at. I can edit the aspect ratio and color in post; I just want to capture the damn footage.
I thought about just using it to stream with when/if I get to that point but that really was just a tertiary reason for buying it. For something this expensive it really shouldn't be such a problem to do something so simple. It feels like the tech is creating its own artificial problems at this point.
I'm not sure there's enough webpage storage available on Amazon to get into all the flaws with the software. I'll try to pick out a quick few summaries in hopes I don't leave out any of the major points (but it's inevitable). The software is so complicated. For some reason, it wants you to pick out which gaming device you're using which is totally unnecessary as it should just be acting as a branch output for what's being sent to your TV--no matter what it is, the stream should be catching it. After a while, it stops detecting that everything's pleasantly hooked up as it should be, and just lazily claims it can't find the device (it's too harrrrrrd). It's also a gluttonous bandwidth hog for uploads, which take an absurd amount of time (although this is partly the fault of the American corporatocracy). You can barely even use Discord voice chat when you're uploading a gameplay capture.
The Elgato Sound Capture software is exactly as useful as a splash screen. Anytime you try to change the settings, the program will crash. You can throw away months of your life bantering back and forth with their hopelessly inane tech support who'll tell you to be Microsoft's problem, Microsoft will tell you to be Elgato's problem, they'll want to look at some spec dump about a few dozen times, ask you to reinstall Windows a few dozen times, and then tell you that the reason it doesn't work is because you have some random game installed on Steam, such as Yonder the Cloud-Catcher Chronicles or RPG Maker 95+ or Zork II: Candy Crush Edition or some such nonsense.
And don't expect it to work with PS3 on HDMI for whatever reason. Whatever Sony does with its hardware, it should be illegal.

Even current Elgatos aren't that great to be honest. I recommend a decent hdmi based avermedia card for modern content and buying a line doubler/tripler like the retrotink 2x or the OSSC for retro content to send to said avermedia card.
The quality is perfect, though for the ps3 is quite limiting but excellent all the same. I have used it to record all the systems I own, which are the ps2, n64, wii, wii u, and ps4. I found the quality of videos vary due to the older consoles having different resolution, but this is excellent hardware and requires a bit of understanding to set it up but there are youtube videos online for that.
takes all the stress of my pc while im trying to game and capture at the same time
the software is also really nice
made my life sooo much easier
took off maybe 3 hrs in post production that i would have to do with every vidio
what i love the best is that u can output in separate files.. so game play, game audio, camera capture and mike are all save separately in different files
amazing!!
