About the Author

Sharon Bracken is a native of Norfolk, Virginia. She graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Child Development. For over 20 years, she has worked as a child development specialist. Because there were no resources available for her son, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of just nine, she wrote the story, Eli the Bipolar Bear. Joshua Nash is a graphic artist in Roseville, CA. He enjoys drawing and making things up. In addition to his own work, he has worked on many exciting projects with clients such as Scholastic, Child Heroes Publishing and Hooked on Phonics. When he is not drawing, he enjoys eating Chinese take-out, and renting movies with his wife, cat and dog.

My wife purchased this book to explain bipolar disorder to our children after she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder II, a milder form. Our children are 8 and 6. The illustrations in the book are beautifully drawn and colored and the expressions on Eli and his friends and family are easy to identify for children. Our kids were quickly drawn into the story which explained the complicated emotions, conflicts and treatment for the disease in a simplified, easy to understand way.
Perhaps the only complaint we had was that the story was very expository with little to no dialogue or action. Maybe that is the best way for it to be written and our kids weren't complaining. Our youngest really enjoys the book, asks for it at bedtime and looks at it for awhile afterwords.
I would have no qualms about recommending this book to anyone with young children who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder or have someone they love who has been diagnosed. It makes the disorder a little less scary and more manageable.

My daughter loved this book and she is seven years old. It helped her realized that her feelings are real and that their are more people out their like her going through the same thing. She has tried more than one medicine and getting the right combination of medicines can take a while.

I have a 7 year old son newly diagnosed with bipolar disorder and I can't read this book to him. Eli is a sweet little bear with challenges like my son, but unlike my son, and most children diagnosed bipolar, the first "fish" medication worked for him. We've learned the first try may not be the one that works...lots of trial and error with disorder. My son has been on a number of meds (after trying the natural route for 2+ years) and we're still trying to find the right one. He's discoraged and to see Eli get it the first try would only be more discouraging. I think if this is being used to explain the disorder to a child about someone else who has the disorder it would be a great resource.

Great way to teach a young child about a mental illness. The story and illustrations are well done. This would make a good addition to any library, family or group that may encounter someone with a mental illness. It is simple but easy for a child to relate to.
