That said, everyone needs a light like this or something similar. (like a derby) LED technology is great, but it is nice to have an effect that is bright enough to use without fog, and projects something on the floor or walls other than patterns of little dots.
The halogen bulbs this uses are fairly inexpensive, and, for me, the brightness they give this effect is worth buying a bulb once in a while. If you make sure you handle the effect carefully, and try not to move it much when the bulbs are still hot, you'll get a longer life out of the bulbs.
The effect does get very hot very quickly, even with the fan. Don't touch it, and don't put it by something flammable, which you shouldn't do with any of your lighting anyway. The fan in it has a big job to do, but it would take a fan ten times the size of the one on the unit to keep the effect from getting hot. More about the fan later.
The duty cycle is a non-issue for me. I don't think any one effect should be left on for longer than a couple minutes, not because of the duty cycle, but because it gets boring seeing the same light for very long. I like to mix up lighting frequently to keep folks entertained and excited. Only much more expensive lights that can do many different effects are worth leaving on for more than a couple minutes at a time. If you are looking for a single light to use for a party, this is not your light, simply because of the duty cycle.
It is a great "wow" effect to add some new excitement to your show every once in a while, but, as with any effect, don't overuse it. It doesn't need any fog to still be a great effect, and only gets better when used with fog.
The biggest problem with this light that I have already mentioned is how hot it gets. I really wish they would have provided for an option to leave the fan running while the lights are off. There is no on or off switch on this. The lights and the fan turn on when you plug it in, or send power to it, and turn off by unplugging or switching the power off.
I will void any warranty (it's inexpensive, so I'm not worried about the warranty) by doing it, but, I plan on wiring a second power cable that will power the fan all the time, and I'll leave the other cable for turning the lights and motor on. I haven't looked to see if the fan is 120 or 12 volts yet, but if I have to power it with a transformer, fine.
Another thing I don't like, and has been mentioned by other reviewers, is that the power cable isn't detachable. Not a deal-killer, but annoying.
All in all, it's a great, inexpensive light that will add some punch to your rig. The audio sensitivity know works well, and isn't either "all-on" or "all-off" like so many other fixtures. A note to anyone who uses sound active lights- Use the sensitivity knob to react to the music. Don't just crank it all the way up. Lights going super fast, all the time, are another pet peeve and detract from your show.
Buy it when you find a good deal on it, and enjoy, knowing the issues it has. If those issues bother you, move on to another light. This "old school" light is still cool. (but hot)
The item arrived in perfect condition and functions the way it should however, it uses way too much power. This is ran using two 300watt halogen light bulbs. Also, it does not explain in the description that this item has a 10 minute on and off duty run cycle. What this means is that you need to shut the unit off after 10 minutes of use, and then let it rest for 10 minutes before turning it on, otherwise it will overheat.
And trust me, if you touch this unit where you aren't supposed to after 5 or 10 minutes of it being on, You will get burned- and it won't be minor burns either.
If you have the patience and the money to spend on the extra energy, go ahead- buy it. IT does what its supposed to and looks amazing in the dark. HOWEVER, if you don't want to get burned, shut it off every 10 minutes, and have to deal with a huge power consumption, go with an LED light or a light such as this one that uses much less power and doesn't have such a short run cycle.
I neither recommend or discourage this purchase.
