Unresponsive and sticky buttons

Out of the box the A, X, and Y buttons are very unresponsive to anything but a perfect hard press. The A and X buttons also stick and don't come back up until unstuck. [See video]

Absolutely unacceptable for a controller. Let alone a controller that costs $180.

UPDATE: I received a replacement controller with the exact same issues.

It is reasonable to assume that if you're here, reading reviews for the Elite Series 2 Xbox controller, you're already a gamer or looking for a gift for a gamer. So you don't need to be bored with the nitty gritty details but this controller works with Xbox, PC, and bluetooth devices including iPads, etc. I attached photos of my unboxing to this review so you can see what's included. Worth noting is that several of the accessories fell out of their slots during shipping.

Long story short, the Elite Series 2 is a remarkably well built controller. I was absolutely stunned by the design and attention to detail. It has a surprising amount of heft but does not feel heavy compared to a normal Xbox controller. Here are the main differences compared to a standard Microsoft branded Xbox One controller:

1. Rubberized grip around the handles
2. Swappable magnetic joystics for different length/feel
3. Swappable magnetic d-pad from standard to disc shaped
4. Up to 4 optional paddles on the back of the controller
5. Adjustable tension joysticks
6. Adjustable trigger locks to increase/decrease length of pull
7. Rechargeable battery via USB-C (built in)

The controller comes nicely packaged in a zippered case, where it rests on a removable charging cradle and has slots for the various parts and accessories included. It can be charged directly via USB-C or set on the cradle either within or outside of the case. Note that the USB-C cable and the manual are underneath the case in the box, so the reviewer stating it wasn't included may just need to dig a little further.

The first time I connected the Elite 2 to my Xbox, it did a quick 2ish minute update and I was ready to go. The Xbox Accessories app lets you completely customize the button layout and joystick sensitivity as well as program as many or as few of the paddles on the back to your liking. You can then save these to up to 3 profiles directly on the controller which are swappable with the new face button in the middle and indicated by the 3 lights.

I've never used a controller with rear paddles before but the first thing I tried was a first person shooter setup where one paddle was jump and one was reload. This way you don't need to remove your thumb from the right joystick to do one of those actions, which is definitely helpful in fast paced games where every millisecond counts. So it would be safe to say that in experienced hands, this controller offers performance enhancements vs. other players. I also really like the adjustable joystick tension, which made it feel like minor movements could be made more consistently.

The Elite 2 feels fantastic in the hands and at this point, it is going to be difficult to go back to a standard controller. I am hoping it is as durable as it looks and feels and will certainly update this review if I run into any problems. It's fair to say that this is my favorite gaming controller I've ever used, from any generation on any console, hands down.

So if you're wondering if this is worth nearly 2 Benjamins, in my opinion the answer is yes. It is a gorgeous, well built controller that has some awesome tech that will allow serious Xbox gamers to excel. I highly recommend it as I am very happy with mine.

That being said, a good analogy would be coffee mugs. If you're the type of person who uses a cheap plastic mug that probably has a scuffed gas station logo on it, and you're perfectly happy with that even though your coffee is only warm for a little while, this controller may not be for you. If you bring your vacuum insulated stainless steel abominable snow-monster tumbler full of coffee everywhere and brag to your friends and coworkers about how you burned your tongue 3 hours after filling it up, this controller is for you, because only the best will do.

UPDATE 1/6/2019: After 3 months of steady use, the controller is working great, and the battery lasts far longer than it needs to. No visible wear and tear, and I have had none of the drifting or sticking button issues others have reported. Still very happy.

Another low quality controller from Microsoft. The thumbstick drifts brand new out of the box. The lines on the back of the controller aren't even so it feels a little different in one hand than the other. Hopefully a third party comes in and starts making Xbox controllers that function because Microsoft clearly can't figure it out.

I might've known this would happen, have sticky buttons right out of the box! This is like the meme that happened last time, so just be cautious. The controller itself is so nice, and you can see and feel all the changes Xbox has made, but at ~$190 this is kind of PepeHands :( Too bad... time to keep replacing till you get a good copy :)

EDIT: Support is the best, cleared up some warranty concerns that I had, went with the good 'ol Q-Tip rubbing alcohol technique! Fixed it up right away! Shame I still had to do it, but it's an easy DIY fix.

I owned 2 of the first line of Xbox One Elite Controllers and I went through 2 of them in a year. They worked good for a few months until the rubber grips began to fail and the buttons stopped working. Right out of the package I could tell that Microsoft mad significant upgrades to the controller. It looks better and is well made! The controller is rechargeable through the case which is a pretty cool feature and there is endless customization with this controller. Strongly recommend this to any gamer and to anyone who has previously owned a XB1 Elite Conroller. Will update my review in a few months.

I had the series 1 and i thought it will be the best controller for a very long time, but this controller is so much better.
The things I like is the solid feeling it has, the full grip in the handles, buttons are more responsive, the sticks pressure can be changed, it is Bluetooth compatible, has a rechargeable battery and a charging stand, and much more customizations and joysticks compared to the first version.

Big upgrade from the first xbox elite controller. The build quality is seems a lot better and a lot of cool features.

The adjustable triggers are amazing and so easy to switch between, just a flick of a switch on each side of the controller and there's 3 different settings for your preference.
You can re-map all the buttons to you liking and set them to 3 different set ups. It's very easy to switch between them a press a of a button in the middle of the controller.
I really like the fact you can adjust the tension in the thumb sticks very easily with the tool that's provided. Also has 4 different thumb sticks.
You can charge the controller with the charging dock which comes with it. You can charge it in or out of the case that it comes with. They say 40 hour's of play on a full charge. I haven't played the 40 hours yet. The only thing I don't like is the rechargeable battery is built in, and there doesn't seem to be any way to change it. I'm worried over time it will lose it's ability to hold a charge like with many rechargeable batteries, but time will tell.
Also comes with 14 day free trail of game pass ultimate, but only for new members, so if you have game pass or have ever had game pass your not eligible.

It's an investment for sure but over all I'm really happy with this purchase, hopefully this was help for those xbox fans out there reading this. K I got to go play some games, peace out!

UPDATE: here's an issue found and im probably not the only one having this when using the hair triggers locks at the finest setting the triggers do not register not working.. im thinkin if i should get a remplacement since theres a lot of more issue with quality control. /r/xboxone has a good thread about it!..

Just got it on release date and already feel better than the first series! Well made at least seems to be better quality overall than previously if you like rubberized accessories this is for you.

I received my elite controller yesterday morning, as usual, Amazon's shipping is great!

This review is going to be aimed more at those who owned the original Elite Controller. Although I'll try and make it work for everyone.

For some context, I have had multiple of the original elite controllers. I didn't have any of the issues with the bumpers breaking or the grips peeling. My issue was the sticks starting to drift. My first one lasted me a year and a half, then the second one I had replaced via the warranty after about 8 months. I sold the third one a few days before I received this one and it was still working fine after about 14 months.

This controller feels SOLID. The last one felt pretty good compared to regular controllers, but this one feels amazing compared to even the original elite controller.

Let's start with the new features.

My favorite thing about this controller over the original elite controller is the charging dock. You can remove it from the carrying case for those wondering. I have it sitting on my bedside table so I can have my headphones plugged into it while I watch TV late at night. Now my controller will be fully charged at the beginning of every day!

The new adjustable tension in the thumbsticks is pretty fantastic. I no longer over compensate my aiming as much when I'm playing a FPS! It is super easy to adjust with the provided tool, however if for some reason you lose it, you can adjust it with something you find around the house like a tiny screw driver or maybe even a steak knife.

The third profile that they added will be nice. I'm sure I'll start playing more than two games at some point... But even if I don't, maybe I'll set up a multi media profile, which leads me to my next point.

The new paddle functions! Like the original elite controller, you can customize what button does what and remap different buttons. However, there are a couple of new functions with this! You can now map functions such play/pause, record and screenshot, and even volume control of the TV.

With these new paddle functions, they also added the ability to map a button as the shift key. This allows you to map a second button to each function.

The paddles themselves seem to be a lower profile than the original elite controller. They don't stick out as far and they are more comfortable in your hands.

The only con for me so far, is that the joysticks they provided don't all have two. The dome top thumbsticks and the tall thumbsticks only have one of each, so you can't put two on your controller.

The provided USB type C cable is great quality aswell.

Overall, I'm very please with this controller. At $230 dollars it will not be worth it for most people to buy. However, if you think the price tag is worth it for a exceptional controller, then you will not be disappointed.

The update that you never knew you needed!

This controller is built very well, I would say besides for the Xbox home button it is perfect. I know that I will get use to it. But until then I will just be jarred every time I hit that tactile button. it has a range of motion it's just instant. I know that is why they changed it. The first reason is cause it is probably cheaper to use that kind of button over the old one. But also because it works faster overall.

Build Quality: 5 out of 5

Battery life: 5 out of 5

Botton layout and feel: 4 out of 5

Overall this controller is amazing, it will get you through those long sessions on a single charge no problem. The extra buttons and swappable parts are the same as the last Elite. They work great and give you a full variation of setups. The case with the Dock is the real winner here. I hope that Xbox builds the pin layout on all the Scarlett controllers.

I received a defective controller. The A button sticks occasionally. Perhaps Microsoft spent a lot on design and engineering but the final production decides everything. And this controller is expensive and under the name of "elite".
Amazon immediately sent me a replacement upon my return order. The new one is good.

Had a sticky A-button right from the start. It didn’t have the same nice click like the other buttons, and it would stick down constantly, slowly popping back up on its own. A quick google & YouTube search confirmed that this is an issue with these controllers. We were worried about getting warranty work done on it - sending it Microsoft and not knowing whether they’d charge us or fix it under warranty - but thankfully Amazon took it back and sent us a new one. Thank you, Amazon!!! Two stars because first one was faulty, second one seems fine.

Great Upgrade, Great Cost.

It's expensive and I wasent sure if it was a big enough upgrade from the elite v1 to justify a $250 price, but since my nephew wanted to buy my elite v1 I went ahead and got one. So far it's great! To me the biggest improvements are the joystick tension and the rubber grips. I never had an issue with my elite v1 controller durability wise and this v2 feels more durable and heaftier and the buttons are more clickier. The built in battery has so far lasted around 10 hours without a charge, the claims are 40 hours, but I like to dock it on the charger base after each use so it will always stay charged, hopefully that doesent affect the battery health in the future, I also like how I don't have to swap batteries or search for a charge wire. There is tons of customizations with the app on xbox but I haven't played much with that yet. One thing I had to get used to was the shortened pads, they seemed a bit short for me, but I'm used to them now. If you owned an elite v1 and made use of the extra features, and don't mind spending almost the cost of a console on a controller, this is a worthy upgrade. Recommended.

Everything is perfect except...

The making, feel, material, texture...everything is amazing, top-notch, epic...whatever you wanna call it, as well as the unboxing experience is so lovely, BUT ONE THING, just one thing, I don't know why nobody mentioning about it, it's the WEIGHT, after comparing it to the standard controller, it feels like 2-3 times heavier, yeah that's right, 2-3 TIMES HEAVIER!

I don't know if it's only me, but personally I feel the standard controller has just the perfect weight, think about it if you like to play the ACT games which requires a lot of finger actions, this weight could just make the gaming more energy consuming, it's not ideal for long-time gameplay, which is also the reason why I can not stand with it after a certain time of use.

Same thing for headphones, no matter how good sound they have, if they can not ensure a better comfort, that's a bigger pain point IMO.

Solide d’apparence, et d’aspect agressif.
Les touches arrières sont parfaitement insérées, et moins mobiles (sensibles) que la série 1. Ces pédales sont moins étalées, réduisant le risque de contact accidentel et de pression des touches.
Les surfaces rugueuses améliorent considérablement le confort.
J’ai eu du mal à connecter mon premier player série 2 avec le Bluetooth de mon pc (Predator Hélios 500 i9, 17"), la déconnexion était répétitive.
J’ai retourné l’article pour un tout autre qui semble mieux aller.

J’aime vraiment ce player, mais il n’est pas indispensable pour ceux qui possède déjà la première série. Il offre simplement plus de confort et de possibilité, mais qui ne valent pas totalement son prix.
Je l’ai acquis par besoin de collection, non pas par nécessité étant donné que je possède déjà la première série.

Great controller but with issues

I'll keep it short: this is better than the old Elite by a mile, but it took 3 replacements to get here. Constant issues with buttons not registering, either B or A. On my current one those are working fine but I think the Y button has an issue, but I dont use it much so haven't noticed errors frequently (unlike A, which is jump usually). All in all, keep your receipt because you have a good chance it may be defective.

Excellent controller with a major side affect

I was so excited about this controller, waited months for it to come out and I was so happy when I finally received it. However, my problems began immediately, the controller itself is well built, heavy but solid and feels substantial in your hands which is what I wanted, the level of available customization is incredible then I started using the buttons and the triigers, first thing I noticed immediately was one of the triggers was semi stuck and the A button was stuck, then I noticed the other buttons when I pressed them, nothing happened in my game or there was a noticeable lag, I swapped it with my other standard cheap controllers and everything was back to normal, so I proved that it wasn't the games but it was the buttons on this controller that have not been built to a good quality to match the price. So I am deeply disappointed, not sure whether this was a bad batch or anything but I am not paying $200+ for a controller that basic buttons don't work. Amazon have been fantastic as always and offered me an exchange or full refund.

If Microsoft were reading the comments on this controller here on Amazon, they should contact everyone who went through the hassle of buying it and then having to return it and apologize for letting us down. I for one was waiting for ages to get this controller only to be deeply disappointed with it's bad quality.

Better than version one!

If you already have the first version of this controller it may not be worth upgrading and I mean that for price reasons only. However the shoulder buttons are greatly improved. The thumb stick tension adjustments are a literal game changer. The paddle buttons are more firm in a good way. On the version one controller I would only use the top two paddles because I would always accidentally press the bottom paddles since they were too soft. I no longer have that issue. Also, the shift key feature is the best feature on this new controller. Turn a paddle into a shift key and any button now has two functions. It is amazing once you try.

I bought the Elite Series 2 controller to replace my dying first-generation xbox one controller that I used with my PC. After many, many years of abuse, it's finally starting to show its age. So, after reading many mixed reviews on the Elite Series 2, I decided to take a chance and try it out.

First impressions were good. It feels very solid. It's kinda heavy for a controller, but that does give it a more premium feel. The textured rubber grips actually feel a bit slippery at first, but during a longer gaming session they start to feel more grippy, unlike the standard controllers which get more slippery the longer you play. The shoulder buttons, triggers, joysticks, and d-pad all feel way more solid and "premium" than those on the standard controllers.

Unfortunately, all is not perfect. The main four letter buttons on the face are not as nice as those on the standard controller. They feel a bit mushy and sticky. While I haven't had quite the same issues as other people, where the A button gets stuck all the way down, it's still very disappointing given how expensive this controller is.

The swappable components are a nice addition, but for the most part just seem like a gimmick to me. I prefer the regular d-pad over the disc. One of my biggest complaints about the old 360 controller was the shape of the joysticks, so WHY does this controller come with two of them? I'd much rather have had two domed and two tall sticks instead of those useless things. The trigger pull-length adjustment switches are an interesting idea, but aren't all that useful in the racing games I mostly play. The joystick tension adjustment is also a nice feature. I find I have better control with the left stick on the medium setting, it seems to snap back to center faster and easier.

Personally, I find the back paddle buttons mostly just get in the way, especially the lower two. I can see where they'd give you an edge in shooter games that require you to keep both thumbs on the joysticks, but that's not what I use my controller for. I think it's a huge missed opportunity that the xbox accessories app on PC doesn't allow you to remap these to anything you want, not just other existing buttons on the controller.

Bluetooth on PC seems to work pretty well. The range is plenty for my living room, and latency was low enough that I didn't notice any lag. I did have one issue where it wasn't recognized after turning the PC and controller on, after everything was working fine the day prior. However, given how spotty bluetooth performance is on PCs anyway, I'm hesitant to blame the controller here.
