I bought this because it was cheap, and it's the kind I'm used to--when I was a kid, that's all I remember being available. I've had many tanks since then, and if I had something other than goldfish, I used a heater. I've always had this kind: glass, hangs over the edge, and has the little orange light that cycles on and off, telling you when it's heating.
So, once you're used to this kind, they're very easy to use. The water level needs to be high. I can let it drop down to about 1/4 inch below the black rim of the tank, and it's still in line with the marking on the heater. I prefer to keep the water up to the rim, so this works out great. It takes a few weeks for the water to evaporate a quarter inch, and at that time I add more water or do a partial water change.
Yes, the cord is very short. I would prefer it longer, but since I have two other cords (light and pump), it's not an issue because I plug all three cords into an extension cord. I keep the end of the extension cord behind the tank and plug the three cords in, there. That prevents water from running down to the electrical outlet, too!
I've had this a couple months, and it has kept the temperature precisely where I set it! To turn it up or down, just turn the knob very slightly, and wait a day for the water to fully register. One slight turn of the knob=about a 1/4 of a degree in temperature.
I'm using it in a 2 1/2 gallon tank!! I think it says a lot for this heater that it can keep the water precisely right in such a small amount of water. It's recommended for any tank up to 5 gallons.
I'm very satisfied with this heater.
7-MONTH UPDATE:
Today is March 9, 2014, and I'm still satisfied with the heater. When I say "one slight turn of the knob," I mean barely turning it at all. Turn it JUST ENOUGH SO YOU CAN SAY IT MOVED. Seriously, the knob is that sensitive. Also, where you set it seems to dictate to the heater how often it should go on and off, NOT a certain temperature. So, the temperature of the tank will change if the room temperature changes! I had to reset it for winter and will probably have to again this spring. Still, for the price, I'm satisfied.

Let me break it down,, the “heater “ itself is pretty good,, it is the thermostat that is junk. One day my tank was 65 degrees the next it was 85 degrees and so on.
