Superior Technology. Superior Strings.
Less Sweat, Debris, And Finger Squeak
The way your strings sound has a lot to do with what you normally can’t see. While both of our patented coatings reduce noisy finger squeak, they also cut down on a large number of other pesky annoyances common to your average uncoated string. Sweat, skin, dirt, and even air, for example, can do a lot of damage to your strings. And if you live in a hot, humid area, the moisture in the atmosphere can wreak total havoc on your strings’ tone life. But with Elixir Strings, you’re getting world-class protection that’s engineered to endure.
Polyweb Coating Vs NANOWEB Coating
POLYWEB Coating was our first coated string innovation all the way back in the '90s. It tends to warm and mellow the string’s tone and has a fast, slick feel that’s gentle on the fingers, which lets players keep jamming without the strings getting in the way. As a response to players who said they prefer a more traditional feel, NANOWEB Coating was then designed. This ultra-thin coating allows a brighter, crisper tone while offering the same amount of tone-life protection as its predecessor.
Coated Like No Other
Unlike other string brands, Elixir Strings coats the whole string. This protects not only the outer string surface but also the gaps between the windings where common tone-deadening gunk typically builds up in other brands’ coated and uncoated guitar strings. That’s why Elixir strings retain their tone longer than any other brand’s string, coated or uncoated. Simply put, build-up and corrosion kill your tone, and Elixir strings protect against elements that cause build-up and corrosion. All while sounding exactly how you’d expect a premium set of strings to sound.
Corrosion protection between wrap wire windings is all well and good, but you may be asking yourself, 'What about the strings that don’t have a wrap wire?' And we’re proud to tell you, don’t worry—we’ve got those covered too. Literally. With our signature Anti-Rust Plating, even your plain steel strings defy the elements. This ensures longer tone life not just for your coated wound strings, but for your entire set. When we say you’ll have more gigging, jamming, touring, or practice time between string changes, we mean it.

Jam on and on (and on) with the same premium acoustic guitar strings that experienced players worldwide trust to keep their incredible tone longer than any other string available. Unlike other string brands, Elixir Strings coats the whole string. This protects not only the outer string surface but also the gaps between the windings where common tone-deadening gunk typically builds up in other brands’ coated and uncoated guitar strings. Anti-Rust Plating on plain steel strings ensures longer tone life for the entire set. Who wouldn’t love more quality playing time between the hassle and cost of string changes? Crafted to last, these acoustic strings constructed with 80/20 (80% copper, 20% zinc) bronze wrap wire boast a warm, robust tone that sounds “played-in” right out of the pack while still retaining a remarkably clear mid-range presence. The POLYWEB Coating brings a soft, slick, and fast feel to the playing experience. For a more traditionally textured, “uncoated” feel, try our ultra-thin NANOWEB Coating. The 80/20 Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings with NANOWEB Coating, for example, might be a good fit, especially if you’re also looking for a crisper, brighter, and more vibrant tone. For strings that strike a dynamic balance between full-bodied tone and sparkling high-end clarity, our Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings deliver exactly that alongside our NANOWEB Coating’s more traditional feel. Of course, the kind of string you play is all a matter of personal preference. Not sure what tone or feel is right for you? Try them out for yourself, and find your new favorite string from Elixir Strings. For a more in-depth look at what makes our strings so special, scroll to the branded info further down the page. Top customer reviews
The coating does affect string sound and I noticed it for the first session or two of playing. After that, what stood out to me was that the strings never lost their tone. For weeks. Ernie Ball Earthwoods sound great when installed, but after a week of playing, I can feel and hear them start to deaden out. The Elixirs take a hit on day one and two, but they don't wear down for weeks at a time. Months even. To me, by the time I am on my fifth session of playing (in one-to-two hour sessions), the Elixirs start to surpass the others and they continue to shine at that level for quite a long time. In fact, degradation of sound was so minuscule on my last set that I never heard it. I changed out the strings when I began to see visible marks at the fret and pick area (assuming where the coating was starting to chip/wear). The change did make them sound better... I could tell after I put the new ones on that the old ones were worn, but it was minor.
In short, you pay three times more for these strings, but you should get five times more life out of them. To me, choosing a $5-$6 set of strings instead is being penny wise and pound foolish.
I will be sticking with these for a long time, unless I discover a better brand, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
I play a Takamine acoustic electric, and while I love my guitar, it has a thinner body and has never had quite as full a sound as my wife's old Fender acoustic. These strings have a bit warmer and more full sound that my 80/20 Polywebs had when they were new, and they're a little bit brighter, which I like. It took a couple of days of breaking the strings in before they really reached that good sound every keeps raving about, but once they did - oh buddy! It's gotten me reaching for the guitar after work a lot more often now, which is a great feeling. I know Elixirs are a little pricey compared to some other brands (especially if you buy locally - my local music shops were all 50% higher than Amazon's price), but you really owe it to yourself to try these out at some point. It's a small premium for something that has the potential to change your playing style and habits in a big way, and Elixir's longevity have always more than made up for their cost in my experience.
