EXCEPT FOR THE PROOFREADING: errors were missed when put in the Kindle format. It is rather disheartening when there are twice to three times the number of errors than pages in the book. It is not the author's fault; the fault lies with whoever published and then proofread it in Kindle format. Had all of the 16 books not been so delightful in every way, all of the collections would have gotten 1 star.
I persevered, however. It took me much longer to read them because of the errors. I have read all of the collections and will stick with the 4 star ratings. The higher rating because the author had absolutely nothing to do with the proofreading! The stories, writing of them and characters far outweigh the miserable job of the publisher's proofreader/formatter. I hope they weren't paid for their work!
If you love old fashioned romance, when a kiss is enough to make your heart skip a beat, not to mention entangling character interaction as a part of your Regency Romance experience, then don't let the proofreading/formatting problems keep you from reading these books. They are well worth the time and effort and a real bargain for four books each . . . they are NOT novellas!
Elizabeth Chater was truly a "3-kg diamond in a platinum setting" of an author.
The Kindle version of her novels were transferred from the original print, and along the way mistakes occurred which were not caught. I have noticed a "1/4" in place of a letter, for example, and other typos, as well as repeated sentences, however, you can figure out what was intended. All four of the stories in this collection are clean, as were the many other Chater novels I have read with the exception of Emerald Love (which contains rape scenes). These are not my favorite Regency Period novels, but most of her work is worth reading.
There had not been proofread very well as there were quite a few mistakes
I will probably read more by this author because I enjoy the stories.

This is an oft used plot device where the uncaring father loses everything gambling. An unrepentant rake will clear his debts in exchange for the virginal Matilda. Having heard enough about her prospective husband she flees with her personal servant. From here in it gets a bit complicated with layers of interlacing intrigue as she offers herself as the personal chef of Major Bruce new clan chief.
This is the least convincing of all the stories but an enjoyable romp none the less. It is full of death and disaster as the naive heroine tries to uncover the facts behind her father and sister’s death.
A TIME TO LOVE
Moira Lovelace comes from a vaguely aristocratic family but is cut off from any funds when hher father dies. On her way to take up an offer of hospitality from her mother’s rich cit relation she inserts herself into a dangerous situation with a rich handsome marquess. Major Hilary Norman tries to protect from her compassionate but impulsive behaviour. The question is whether she will recognise that sometimes beauty is only skin deep and that other qualities are what you really want in your life’s mate.
A PLACE FOR ALFREDA
I enjoyed this story the most. Alfreda’s father must have a male heir or risk loosing the estate to a controlling cousin so when his wife and mistress give birth on the same night he substitutes his legitimate daughter with his illegitimate son. All goes well with this until when Alfreda is 18 the governess who raised her dies. Short of money her father cuts off the allowance he paid for her upkeep and sells the house. Forced to travel to London the story of Alfreda’s past is revealed as is a threat to her future.
I recommend this whole collection to any who enjoy to read Regency Romances. I've read these stories, storyline, characters and basic good reads, I know I probably will want to read them again, but I must read book 5 first!.
