"Miller's painstaking crafting of language and attention to atmospheric detail create a clever story where nothing is as it seems."
"Spare, evocative language and direct sentences contribute to the suspenseful pacing...Comical characters, ghost story tropes, and a lively pair of intrepid protagonists help keep this spooky novel from getting too scary, and Brykenskova's faux-naive illustrations contribute."
"A vaguely Victorian setting, the snootily funny exchanges between the title characters, and the frequent references to other, cozier works of literature may lull readers into a false sense of security. Zenobia’s love of Poe gives a better idea of the story’s direction, as do the Gothic-feeling black-and-white illustrations."

The three (Henry and the two girls) move into Henry’s childhood home. It doesn’t take long for Zenobia to begin searching for ghosts—or spirits as they prefer to be called—in the spooky old manor. Forbidden to enter the East Wing, the girls find more than they expect as they explore the prohibited space.
This book is definitely for the older middle grade reader. The focus on ghosts throughout the book is exciting for older kids, but could be a little scary for younger readers. And it does definitely get scary toward the end. A very compelling story, but make sure your kids are ready for it so they don’t get nightmares!
