Having read something else by this author in the past and not loving it, I was worried this would turn into another failed read for me and I just didn't want that. I wanted something fun and creepy. Different and lovable. I guess you could say, I wanted a lot but was expecting very little.
With a setting set in Georgia and ghosts galore, I opened this with trepidation but excitement as well. I was so in the mood for a good ghost story.
I have always admired those authors that can write from the point of view of a gender other than their own. It must be hard, challenging even, to be in the head of someone completely different from your own norm and yet, Bryan pulled it off beautifully. Ellie was fierce, strong, brave and tough and you could even say a tomboy at heart but she was still soft heartened and kind as well. In fact, the thing I loved about her most, was that she was so normal. An average every day person doing a very dangerous job that is anything but average or normal.
There were times while reading this that I had to stop and look around me to make sure no one (i.e. read “ghost” here) was in the room with me. I was so thankful I started this during the bright sunny day. I think if I would have started this at night, I would have been in trouble. I'm not sure I would have been able to sleep at all. Certain scenes in this book were down right creepy (hello scary dark asylum!) and I loved it.
Overall this was a fabulous start to what promises to be a very action packed, creepy series. I loved every single minute of this book and I can't wait to read more. I can finally see what all the fuss is about.
I thought the book had a really good plot, and it was fast paced. The actually mystery was pretty good. However, I did figure quite a bit of it out myself.
It took me a long time to warm up to Ellie. She wasn't very nice to the people she worked with, and her attitude towards Stacey was really unfair. However, I liked her better by the end of the book. I really liked all the investigators, and I hope they show up in the next books.
I will probably read the next books in the series, because this was a good, fun read. It had the right amount of creepy in it. I don't believe in ghosts, but it seemed like the author did an excellent job of researching ghost hunters.
I gave it four stars because I didn't like Ellie until about 75% of the way through the book. I like strong, independent women, but I didn't like her attitude towards Stacey. I know some of her defensive attitude was due to her previous trauma, but she refused to give Stacey or Jacob a chance. Jacob didn't show up until the very end so it was hard to know what to think of him. He seems like a good character though.
There was a little bit of language, but there was no sex. Also, there were several grammatical errors that made it difficult to read in certain places. Overall, it was a pretty good first book in a series.
The ghost case she works on seems exciting and scary all at once. Her cases involve a lot of scientific knowledge and complicated tools. You may not understand all the schematics behind the investigation, which are very detailed, but the case is compelling and frightening enough to continue the story.
Hired to remove a pesky ghost from an old hotel, Ellie is surprised to discover that things just keep getting worse.
If you like a plot twister and a little mystery mixed in with your haunts then give this one a read. J L Bryan’s writing had me hooked from the beginning. I liked the humor mixed with the danger of very unhappy evil spirits.
I loved the ending and couldn’t help but smile as I went to see more of what J L Bryan has to offer.
So if your house is haunted, be sure and call Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper. She will get the job done!
It is well worth reading if you enjoy paranormal ghost stories.
