The principle character, Jess, a detective, is complex and intelligent. I remain puzzled about her cultural background, part indigenous? She appears to have been raised in an Anglo family with close ties to the Maori - her knowledge of Maori language and customs is not casual but has deep connections. Such insight often aids Jess in her investigations. Her reticence to express her feelings and thoughts to colleagues appears genuine but frustrating to the viewer. I looked forward to watching two episodes each night - a real pleasure! Highly recommended by a veteran mystery viewer - going back to the first American broadcast of Inspector Morse.

I watched the first episode of the Gulf on one of the PBS stations with a relative visiting from the East Coast. At the end of this episode the ending left both of us wondering what happens next. We discussed how it would continue in the subsequent episodes and was very interested as to what would happen next. The purchase of season 2 was a gift from me. And based upon our discussion in a subsequent call, "they all loved it as it was filled with gallons of adrenaline, unrelenting action and dangerous characters."

While well aware that actors and actresses are tethered to the scripts given them, this character, supposedly one of the "good guys," is THE most unlikable I've ever followed. Miserable would be a compliment of her. Handed a cup of tea, no thank you. Condescending to not only her partner, but every other character. Little to no empathy for her daughter, albeit she's right behind Elliott on The Pathetic Scale.

Pandemic desperation drove me to this show after watching every show in the universe the past 3 years.
I love Brit/Aussie/New Zealand police procedural shows.
The main characterc is talented but she did not resonate with me.
Average crime drama.
I was hoping they would get rid of the dead husband after season 1 but he is still there in season 2.
Don’t know if I can watch another season with the ghost of the dead husband.

We just finished watching season 2 and enjoyed it thoroughly. Very good writing and performances. Jess savage and Justin Harding characters are engaging, as are all the characters.

Really like the Maori actors, culture and language; there should be more Maori characters.

The setting/scenery is beautiful. Ready for season 3!
