Kendalee Walker and Elliott Dawson met totally by accident. Preload was visiting some children/fans in the hospital and somehow ended up in Daniel Walker's room. Daniel was hospitalized with severe burns to his legs and feet, and was going through the slow, painful process of healing. His mom, Kendalee was always at his side day and night when she wasn't at work as a cashier in a grocery store. Elliott felt a deep connection to Daniel and an instant spark with Kendalee. He was totally amazed at her strength and courage. Daniel is carrying a mountain of guilt and pain. Her cheating ex had left her months ago and left her without money, and homeless with a son severely depressed who refused to see his Dad. Elliott took things under his control. Members of the band visited frequently, he would take turns occasionally so Kendalee could get some sleep, whenever anything was needed, he took care of it and Kendalee fell under his spell. Their relationship was quick and off the charts hot. But Elliott is trying to find a way to tell her of his past and is terrified it will send her away. He needs help, and only knows one way to get it, but it threatens their future together.
There is so much pain in this story, but the love counters it and gives hope. This band of brothers damaged as children are emerging as wonderful, talented men with huge hearts. I have read and re-read all Ms. Coles books, and this one is one of her best. It can be read as a stand alone, but don't miss the others in this series and her first series, Second Circle Tattoo. Her work is amazing, and each new book a joy to read.
But I just love them so much, I try to read slower so I can have more time with them. So it wouldn't end way too soon.
This was the case with Elliott Redeemed. I didn't devour it. I took my time, getting to know the characters, falling in love with them.
Kendalee is a soon-to-be-single mom with quite a lot on her plate. Her husband had cheated on her - excuse me, her a-hole husband - and her son was in the hospital from severe burns.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. So the last thing she needed was to lust over a rock star her son worshiped.
But Elliott wouldn't take no for an answer.
I'm not going to give you any details/spoilers because one should definitely read this book. The feels are strong with this one, let me tell you that. Elliott's past, heck, even his present state of mind broke my heart, but he found something to combat his demons and Kendalee was perfect for him.
And he was exactly what Kendalee needed to find herself again. Sometimes we lose ourselves and don't even realize it, until something big happens. What happened to Lee was bound to open her eyes, make her see it was time to change certain things.
I loved reading about the other characters. Quite a few things happen with them, as well. We're kept up to date when it comes to the band members and their girlfriends/wives.
I could go on and on but I won't. Read the book and see why I chose to torture myself by reading it slowly.
I voluntarily agreed to read an early copy of this book. My rating is 4.5 - 5 stars.
Book #2: Preload Series
Source: Netgalley and Purchase
My Rating: 5/5 stars
There are a few authors in my world I feel never, ever let me down and Scarlett Cole is absolutely one of those authors!! Elliot Redeemed, the second book in the Preload series is wonderfully strong and incredibly moving!
Elliott Dawson is exhausted and that is how he spends most of his life. Make no mistake, the time he spends on the road with Preload is worth the tired, but the time he spends struggling with his darker desires, that’s not worth the tired. Elliott’s darker desires have been under control for many years now, but it is truly a daily struggle to maintain that control. His desire for fire sometimes becomes nearly overwhelming and there is nothing Elliott can do but escape to his safe place and create a blaze that burns off his anxiety and reduces some of his exhaustion. Elliott has long thought this exercise is the only way he can continue to control his dark desires, and then he meets Kendalee Walker.
Kendalee Walker once had it all; the doting husband, the well-mannered and handsome son, and a home and bank account that allowed for serious comfort. That all went away when she caught he husband in bed with another woman and her now-depressed and angry son burned down their home. Kendalee is now broke, her marriage is over, and her son has burns over a significant portion of his body. The only thing that seems to brighten their seemingly dismal future is the completely random and unexpected visit from Elliott and one his bandmates, a service they offer exclusively to the children’s hospital. As it turns out, that visit changes everyone’s life.
Elliott understands his connection to Kendalee’s son (fire and abuse!) but, he can’t explain nearly as easily his connection to Kendalee. Kendalee sparks (HA!) everything good and protective in Elliott and quiets the demons and dark desires he battles constantly. For the first time in his adult life, Elliott can see beyond his own colossal struggles and can envision a future with true and lasting happiness. All he must do is convince an extremely guarded and wary woman that he’s not only good for she and her son, but he’s exactly what they both need in their lives. Oh, and he has to find a way to break it to her that he has his own issues with fire and abuse that will continue to be a factor in their lives forever.
The Bottom Line: Holy Hell!! I’m not sure how dark it got in Scarlett Cole’s head when she was writing this book, but what came out on the pages is awfully dark. In fact, I think this may be the darkest book of the entire world/series - Second Circle Tattoos included! This book runs the gamut from arson/pyromania to physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, to extremes in love and devotion. There isn’t a reprieve of any kind once you start this book so be prepared for all the feels and prepared to experience a sleepless night because you aren’t going to want to put this one down. I thoroughly enjoyed this read, but need to make clear to potential readers, this isn’t an easy read. Oh, the writing is flawless so that part is easy, but the topics touched on are very dark and emotionally challenging. There was no way I was turning down the challenge and I simply can’t wait for the next book to hit the shelves!
