Great way to get extra movement in my day while sitting in front of my computer. I had bought a under-desk bike and my knees hit the desk constantly. I am 5'6 and have approx 4 inches of clearance at the top. The bottom of my desk is 27.5 inches off the floor. Your chair height plays a roll obviously, but the elliptical movement is more out in front of you versus up and down like the bikes. I think this would work for most people.
It is pretty heavy so once you find its spot you will likely keep it there. I work on low pile carpet so it doesn't slide around. I don't have any issues with my chair sliding away so can't speak to the chair stop that came with this.
The display isn't backlit so it can be hard to see, I use a small flashlight to read my results at the end of the day. I work 8 hours and feel like I am on this all day but usually according to the clock get about 3 hours of pedaling. But I usually net about 300 extra calories burned, which isn't a bad thing. It is easy to do and pretty mindless. Although, I do notice I stop when a task takes a little more concentration. I pedal at a 4 right now, I can sometimes feel it in my legs a little, but I am not working up a sweat, which is ideal for the office. I also am not considering this a "workout", I bought this avoid being so stagnant all day and just keep the blood pumping.
I don't know that you could get a really good workout from this, I think this is best for someone looking for movement and burning more passive calories or for someone who is rehabbing or has some mobility issues.
$200 seems pretty high but so far (had it about 2 weeks) I really think it is worth it because it actually fits under the desk and keeps me moving and is super quiet (so far) and smooth. Sitting for 8 hours a day, every day can increase your risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and the list goes on. I read sitting is the "new smoking". I find that this is a pretty effortless way to build more activity into my sedentary office job and I think it will be worth it, as long as it holds up.
FYI: The elliptical resets at 9999 strides but everything else seems to continue throughout the day. Also, this counts steps. I thought it was odd my mileage was so low thinking it was like a bike. I had to do some digging but 2 strides = 1 step and it takes 5200 steps for a mile. With that info all my numbers added up. I wonder about the calories burned. I read somewhere that these generic counters are generally 25-30% higher than the actual calories burned so I always take 25% off my calories burned.
I want to note that I purchased the regular JR2, not the JR2+. I wanted the newer one, but it wasn't available the day I bought this.
So far, I absolutely love it. I'm using it right now as I type.
PROS:
- It was very simple to assemble and I was pleasantly surprised that this actually came with a full-sized screwdriver, not one of those stupid little 2 inch, cheap, hard to handle-types. Less than 10 minutes to put together and honestly, I just like to take things slowly and at a relaxed pace in life, so I bet most people could manage in half that time.
- While not 100% silent, it's very, very quiet. I was just in a conference call with a coworker and I paid attention to my side's sound levels and my mic didn't pick up anything. I didn't think it would, but I wanted to check. It makes a very faint, hardly perceptible, slight little rasp sound as it rotates. Extremely quiet, overall. ----- Edit after 2 months of using it: it's not as silent as it was at first... Ultimately, this isn't a huge issue for me. It still isn't enough to pick up on my work meetings, but I do want to disclose that this is a little bit noisy. It makes a grindy/scraping noise that sometimes goes away after an hour or two, but sometimes it doesn't. Just wanted to be upfront about my experience and let you know that if you actually need something to be completely silent, then this isn't for you. But for me, it's not a big deal, so it's fine at the end of the day.
- It has good heft to it without it being too heavy. It stays firmly in place and feels solid. It comes with foot straps, but I set them aside. I don't think I'll be adding them, but it's nice to have the option.
- The little rollaway-chair-anchor thing is great. I saw some people say it didn't work well for them, but for me personally, it was the cherry on top of the set up. I can sit back in my chair or scooch forward an inch (better posture, let's be honest) and it still works great, regardless.
- The positioning is perfect for me. I know everyone has different desk setups, and mine isn't anything fancy...Just a basic chair that rolls and a cheap desk I put together myself. I moved my surge protector/battery to the side so that there would be ample room and it all fit super well. You'll probably need to make minor adjustments with your monitors, keyboard, etc, but that's a given in this scenario and not a big deal at all.
- The mat that you can purchase with it is perfect, but it is a shame that it didn't just come with it. So this is sort of a PRO & a CON point. The company would have won more points with me if they'd included the mat with the elliptical. It's a basic accessory that everyone needs. But....money. What else is new?
CONS:
- It's ridiculous that the LCD panel isn't backlit. From what I read, this is also the case with their newest model (the JR2+). That's just an incredibly basic feature nearly everything has these days. And yes, I know that the newer model has an app so you can check the stats on there, but even so, how complex can it be to have a backlit panel? Not everyone wants to download an app anyway. I just want to see my stats throughout the day.... I have to use the flashlight on my phone to check the numbers. That's absurd.
- I checked the battery to see how to go about removing the panel, etc, and I feel like they could have made that a little bit more user friendly. I can manage fine, but if my mother would have gotten this, I think it would have intimidated her. Considering this type of machine is also marketed for the elderly in need of movement while seated, this feels a little technically challenging. Even I (a 34 year old woman who works in tech) was very surprised at the battery setup.
Overall, I'm delighted with it. The last thing I want is for my job to cause a pulmonary embolism or something and let's face it, extra calories burned (over 100 so far in the hour I've been using it this morning) is always a great thing. Honestly, if it just had a backlit display, I would've easily given it 5 stars.
