Editorial Reviews

ELVIS AT STAX: DELUXE EDITON chronicles the 40th Anniversary of Elvis' historic hometown studio sessions of July and December 1973.

Deluxe 3-CD Box Set marks the first gathering of 28 masters and 27 outtakes in one comprehensive package.

The last major studio sessions in the career of Elvis Presley have finally been gathered together for the first time in one comprehensive package, as ELVIS AT STAX: DELUXE EDITION. The deluxe 3-CD box set, a 40th anniversary chronicle of a dozen nights that Presley spent at Stax Recording Studios in his hometown of Memphis in July and December 1973.

ELVIS AT STAX: DELUXE EDITION bristles with energy and dynamism. The proof is in the six consecutive singles that the Stax sessions produced, all of which skirted the Top 40 from 1973 to 1975. In effect, they rivaled some of the hottest streaks that Presley had charted a decade earlier.

The Stax singles still resonate today:
"Raised On Rock" b/w "For Ol' Time Sake" (Hot 100 #41, country #42);
"I've Got A Thing About You Baby" b/w "Take Good Care Of Her" (Hot 100 #39, country #4);
"Promised Land" b/w "It's Midnight" (Hot 100 #14, country #9);
"If You Talk In Your Sleep" b/w "Help Me" (Hot 100 #17, country #6);
"My Boy" b/w Thinking About You (Hot 100 #20, country #14); and
"Mr. Songman" (B-side of "T-R-O-U-B-L-E," Hot 100 #35, country #11).

Starting with his '68 Comeback Special, a reawakened Elvis conjured a remarkable late-career hot-streak that included 1969's From Elvis in Memphis, the revitalized Vegas stage shows documented on That's the Way It Is and On Stage, and a return to his country, blues, gospel and rockabilly roots on 1971's Elvis Country. In January of 1973, Elvis stormed the airwaves with Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite, and soon after signed a new seven-year contract with RCA. In July and December of that year he booked himself into the legendary Stax studio on McLemore Avenue, adding to a string of Memphis studios that had been good luck charms: Elvis had launched his career at Sun, and revived his sense of self at Chip Moman's American Sound in 1969.

The July sessions produced ten masters, eight of which were released on 1973's Raised on Rock, and two held back for 1974's Good Times. Four were also issued as singles, , with "Raised on Rock" climbing to #41 on the Hot 100, Tony Joe White's "I've Got a Thing About You Baby" peaking at #4 country, and "Take Good Care of Her" making the Top 40 AC. All ten of the masters were solid, though by no means extraordinary. Elvis was in good voice, but neither the material nor the band assembled from road regulars and Memphis guests sparked anything really deep. Elvis connected well with bluesier material like "Just a Little Bit" and Leiber & Stoller's "If You Don't Come Back," and gospel-tinged backing vocals add weight to a few ballads, but the sessions never lift off in the way of his earlier work at American Sound.

This is another lovingly compiled collection of Elvis's 70s recordings at the great Stax studio. Critically dismissed at the time of their original release, these songs put Elvis in one of the great rock and roll studios ever and use a mixture of Elvis's guys and Stax greats to record a typically diverse group of songs including rock, pop, country, blues and gospel. As with all of Elvis's 70s recordings, they were surprisingly uncommercial for American radio of the day, with just a few songs clearly designed to be singles (Raised on Rock the best example), which showed that Elvis had stopped trying to make hits and just recorded songs he liked. The result is an collection that shows that Elvis could still shine when he liked the material as he clearly did at Stax. It's Midnight, Honkey Tonk Angel, and Loving Arms are great country songs. If that Isn't Love is a classic Elvis gospel. And then there's Promised Land, the greatest recording of one of Chuck Berry's great songs, a song that showed what Elvis was still- capable of doing with quality rock material.

I'll keep it short and sweet - this is one of the best things I have ever purchased. I suggest listening to it with the volume cranked up, and this music just seeps into your soul. Any true Elvis fan will be elated, and it will make new fans out of those who haven't experienced Elvis' magnetism and charisma yet. Elvis + Stax = I've Got a Feelin' in My Body.

BUY IT.

I had most of the music featured on this collection on the "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" box set and the Rhythm And Country" single c.d. Well, believe it or not the sound quality on this 3 c.d. set is even better. The stereo separation and musical detail clarity is stunning. It makes one feel that the King and his band are in your living room. The packaging is beautiful and very creative. The set comes in a book size holder and has a 44 page booklet. The booklet is full of recording detail and pictures. The compact discs are housed in a separate 3 panel cardboard folder which has pictures of the tape boxes where the masters were located. There is one problem with the folder. The discs are held in with a sticky substance and are a bit difficult to get out for the first time. I do recommend that a compact disc cleaning product be used before the discs are played for the first time. Once the discs are cleaned no further problems will occur.

As for the music itself expect 1970's production full of effect laden guitars and backing vocalists. Of course, not every song/performance is really worth repeated listening. However, I really enjoyed 80% of the material and I think that some of the outtakes were better than the finished masters.

John Lennon said Elvis died when he went into the US Army and to some extent over the years I've thought the same. However this changed when I bought the modestly priced triple CD collection of his Stax recording sessions. Maybe John was wrong. You can only be a teenager for so long....I had matured a bit and with time my tastes in music has changed a little and it is reflected in my enjoyment of most things Elvis put out, even after the army days.

This is a great triple album and much better value than buying just the single set which was originally my intention. The triple set has a rather over-big packaging with a good 44 page colour book that has photographs of Elvis in karate pose, in his car, the recording documents and other interesting paperwork. Also liner notes about each of the songs presented. The out takes album (which is also the single set) has some value in how the Pelvis chatted or prepared for some tracks, warm ups for want of a better description. I found the whole album the best value Elvis product that I can remember for a while. There is no dragging the bottom of the barrel here, it is all good.
