Product Description

Kurt Russell IS Elvis in a career-defining performance.

Just two years after Elvis Presley died, Kurt Russell brought him back to life in the original biopic about the King of Rock ’n’ Roll. Broadcast on ABC in 1979, Elvis marked the first time director John Carpenter would work together in what would become a legendary pairing in film history (Escape From New York, The Thing, Big Trouble In Little China, The Thing and Escape From L.A.)

Tracing Presley’s life from his impoverished childhood to his meteoric rise to stardom to his triumphant conquering of Las Vegas, Elvis features Shelley Winters (Gladys Presley), Season Hubley (Priscilla Presley), Bing Russell (Kurt’s real-life father as Vernon Presley), Pat Hingle (Colonel Tom Parker), Joe Mantegna (Memphis Mafia member Joe Esposito) and Ed Begley Jr. (drummer D.J. Fontana) in an all-star supporting cast for an effort that garnered numerous Emmy nominations including Outstanding Lead Actor for Russell.

This is the Elvis bio pic you need to see
I remember watching this back in '78 when it was on TV, and I loved it. It's still as good now as it was then. Kurt Russell looks amazingly like Elvis and moves like him as well. The movie focuses on Elvis, not Colonel Parker like the newest movie out there does. John Carpenter knew Elvis was the star and who we wanted to see - Parker is supporting cast only. The bonus features are worth watching, too. This was the first time John Carpenter worked together. They went on to make The Thing, Escape From New York, and Big Trouble In Little China together - much different movies than this one, of course -they're a great team.

    Love Russell. Good bio movie.

This is the best of all the releases. This is an amazing version as it contains all the footage from the television version and most of the version that was released in Canada theatrically. There are a of of people that think the movies was cut one song short at the end during the stage performance in Las Vegas. This is untrue as in the U.S. the movie ended with Elvis singing American Trilogy. It does seem to be an abrupt ending for such a great movie but that would lie on the editors. I spoke to Mr. McDowell and he said that he recorded over 30 songs for the movie, so, they couldn't have used anyone of them that would have been released in 1969 to end them movie. The song Burning Love was not released until 1972. The film ends at the beginning of his 1969 Las Vegas come back. A great movie that last the test of time. Kurt Russell is still the best actor that ever portrayed Elvis and left huge shoes for any other actor to fill that comes next. There is another Biopic Elvis movie coming next year and expectations are low for the actor playing Elvis but high for Tom hanks who plays the Colonel. Ronnie McDowell did an awesome job doing the sound track and may not have sounded just like Elvis but it made all the live performances in the film feel genuine and he has great passion for the music that you can hear in his voice. He is one of the best entertainers that is highly underrated and he should have received and Emmy for this movie. He could even get an invite to the NBC TV 68 Come Back anniversary special last year.
The Blu Ray transfer is as good as you are going to get for a television film from the 1970's. Part of the blame can also be placed on Dick Clark Productions as they held on to the film and never re-released more than one or two times on television since the original release. Fan hand wrote into the studio for years and it fell on deaf ears until finally an official DVD release happened which was great too. If you want the original theatrical ending with the song Burning Love than pick up the DVD version also. The video transfers are identical and above average. Amazon usually has the movie for $20.00 or less and if it is out of stock do not pay $100.00 or more for it because they will get more.

Like it says on the cover of the DVD: Kurt Russell IS Elvis. There have been many actors over the years who portrayed Elvis, but only Russell gets him down: physically, vocally and mannerisms. Because this movie came out shortly after Elvis’s death it’s mostly positive and doesn’t deal with his drug issues and the darker side of his life before his death. That doesn’t stop the movie from being a fantastic look at Elvis’s rise to fame from poverty and leads right up to his triumphant comeback in Vegas. Five stars, and if you buy only one Elvis movie this should be the one.

I saw the most recent 'Elvis' movie (of 2022) and it reminded me of the original Elvis movie that I saw when I was a kid. Low and behold, the movie of my youth is available on Blu-ray and in a quick 48 hour Prime member delivery (and due to modern technology) I now have my own copy of that long-ago flick. I picked an evening when I knew I had a good 3 hours of uninterrupted time and put it on to play. Such a great movie -- even better than I remembered. The relationship between Elvis and his mother is emphasized in this movie and I have to admit that I got a little misty-eyed more than once while viewing it. If you're not a huge Elvis fan you will still like this movie, but if you are a fan of 'Suspicious Minds' or 'In the Ghetto', you will LOVE this movie! Watch this, and you will thank me later.

Beautifully presented in the Blu-Ray format, John Carpenter's "Elvis" stands up incredibly well, even in the shadow of the recent Baz Luhrmann blockbuster of the same title. Originally a television movie broadcast in 1979 (and recut for theatrical release in many world markets), "Elvis" takes a pretty straightforward approach to Elvis' semi-familiar rags-to-riches, top of the pops tale. Director John Carpenter and lead actor Kurt Russell forged a solid working / artistic bond that would carry them through a number of memorable productions over the ensuing years. This was their jumping off point, and it's definitely a memorable one. Being shot for broadcast television in the late '70s handcuffed the production in some ways (language, skin, situations), but opened it up for interpretation in others (song selection, biographical musings, career might-have-been questions). Russell and Season Hubley make a believable Elvis and Priscilla, Kurt's real-life father, Bing Russell, is fine as Vernon Presley, as is Shelley Winters as Gladys Presley, but well-known character actor Pat Hingle misses the mark as Colonel Tom Parker. Kurt gives a very good performance and is at his best in the dramatic moments. He's less believable as the legendary entertainer on stage (lip-syncing to Ronnie MacDowell's Elvis-lite vocals). Most of the side characters are underdeveloped; sadly, this is especially true of the "Memphis Mafia," Elvis' inner-circle group of friends who deserve much more screen time. The film ends post-'68 Comeback as Elvis makes his triumphant return to the Las Vegas stage, so the largely drug-induced downfall is never really dealt with. Four stars and recommended to Elvis fans of all ages.
