I first had this album years ago on a re-issued vinyl edition (pre-CD). There's much more than the orignal album here as released in 1956. This collection is paired with Elvis' second album "Elvis". Also included are the singles released during that time, A and B sides. In those days the singles sold the album, the singles were not included on the album. If your a music geek, you'll enjoy reading the liner notes on the putting together of the album. At the time RCA was desperate to put out an Elvis album, which is made up of Sun sides never released, songs Elvis was singing live at the time, along with songs Elvis just loved singing. It's really the singles which stand out most ironically; Heartbreak Hotel, I Was the One, Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel etc. There's some really cool stuff in the album material however; One-Sided Love Affair, Trying To Get To You, Love Me, So Glad You're Mine etc.
I wish I was around in '56 to hear this stuff over the radio. No internet streaming, no downloading, just vinyl. If you heard a song you liked, off to the record store with your allowance money/weekend-job cash. Or you had to wait for the song to be played again over the airwaves. But you have that new song in your head "Hound Dog", by that weird guy who's got a name that sounds like science fiction, you just gotta hear that song again...
As long as Legacy continues to release these steller sounding editions of Elvis' key albums; paired with another album, and the singles of the time; I'll continue to add them to my collection.
Over 50 years after the world was turned on its ear by the raw, wild sound of the boy from Tupelo, a historic 'Legacy' edition of the his first two full length records for RCA have been released, allowing these legendary recordings to sound better than ever.
"Elvis Presley," his debut, still sounds as fresh as it did in 1956. This is The King before he had his crown, a young, vibrant upstart with something to prove. Each song is bristling with confidence, from the timeless opening "Blue Suede Shoes" to the swinging blues "Trying to Get to You" to his haunting take on "Blue Moon" and everything in between. His backing band of Scotty Moore, Bill Black and D.J. Fontana still play with the same energy and abandon of the Sun recordings, and help define these songs as much as Elvis's unmatched voice.
To pad out this beautifully remastered edition, several of the hit singles he scored at the time have been added, included the game changing # 1 classic "Heartbreak Hotel," the aching "I Was the One," and the pulsating "My Baby Left Me."
His second album, "Elvis," is also included, and in my opinion is an ever stronger collection than the first record; some of Elvis's best recordings are on this record, including the pleading "Love Me," the gorgeous "First in Line" (one of his greatest ballads), and several others. Once again, several legendary singles have been added as bonus tracks, including "Hound Dog" and "Love Me Tender," and the sound is once again fantastic.
This is a double shot of two of the most important in rock and roll and comes highly recommended.
