But, not only were the illustrations appealing but so was the story line, the story line to me kept me reading kept me excited and emotional at some of the emotional scenes especially the part where EM and the cat had to say goodbye due to a fork on their path, this gave me an overwhelming blast from the past of the times I have had to say goodbye to people due to a fork in the path, so it made me feel so emotional for EM and the cat.
I tend to not like to give out to much about the storylines within books but I will say one thing, that don’t let a simple illustration book turn you away because you may think it is too childish, EM is certainly not just for children although it does give good messages out to children, there is something for everyone to enjoy within EM! I strongly recommend EM to anyone’s book collection.
Lëaf describes this kind of feeling perfectly, with her short story, she guides you step by step in it, and you start asking yourself what is going to happen, if Em will be able to find the light to warm up his poor little soul.
Em is not alone all the time, he meets a flower, and then a cat... Travel companions, that give Em that little glow that makes him feel happy, at least for a bit. This reminds me of people you meet in the sad moments of your life, that somehow leave you a sign, a glimmer of happiness in your heart.
I love the development of the story and its ending, when Em finally finds the strength to climb the hill, and finds the light, the realization of his dream... To come home.
While I was reading the last page I felt free and happy, full of love, I felt like Em!
As for the illustrations, they are beautiful and fit the story perfectly. While I was reading I could even see Em "moving", drawn to my imagination!
Em is a simple story with a big impact on your emotions, and it makes you reflect about who you are, and who and what are truly important in your life.
or simply just seeking fulfillment, will not feel they are reading about Em, but themselves.
The beautiful graphic images combined with the simple yet profound literature, create a deeply personal experience which compels the reader to face their own reality of life. Em is a reminder that not all friends stay friends forever and sometimes we are completely alone, but nonetheless we continue to prowl through this thing called "life" where there is always a light. Sometimes, we must move beyond our own self-prejudices and continue moving towards the future, rather than focus on the past, because there can always be something waiting for us that we could miss. Em is also a reminder to see the beauty in each day. Our thoughts can certainly make us feel in prison, however, the world itself is a mirror to how we see ourselves.
brings to light the feeling and yearning we all have in our hearts. To
be loved, accepted and to truly find the place where you can just be
yourself and let your light shine ! Shine on, Leaf. I will be looking
for more good stories from you!
