"You love a person for who they are, embracing what they've been and hoping for what they'll become."
Ember held a much different feel from the previous books in the series. While it did have a romantic aspect, it felt much more like a tale of redemption. Where the previous books had a lot of the family workings and the individual relationships within the larger group, Ember genuinely felt like Phoenix's book. While I loved each one, the other books could have been anyone's story but with different names. Ember stayed true to the character that we have come to know. It forced Phoenix to confront every single one of his demons and I thought it was done quite eloquently.
"Everyone loves a bit of darkness - until it consumes them."
I think it would be hard not to develop a soft spot for Phoenix after reading Ember. He really stepped up to the plate in all aspects and very much allowed himself to be painted in a new light. I admired that he wanted to redeem himself in the eyes of his friends, even if he didn't believe he could be. There was something so complex that came out about his persona in Ember. Every time Rachel writes a female in this series, I find myself telling me she is my favorite and Bee is no exception. She was vulnerable and insecure, but never stopped seeing the good in people, particularly Phoenix. When he pushed, she pushed harder. When he gave up, she believed enough for both of them. Her character became the perfect complement to Phoenix.
"It was getting harder and harder to ignore her warmth - when I lived in a constant state of near-death cold."
Overall, I really did enjoy this installment of the Eagle Elite series! There were a couple twists that kept you on the edge of your seat and definitely some romance to keep your heart swooning. I don't know that I will ever be ready for this series to end. It's one that keeps branching off, leading me to want everyone's story. However, I'm glad it won't be ending anytime soon and I'm super excited to get Sergio's story next!
Ever since Phoenix was left out the the Elect, I was anticipating his story very much and Rachel did justice to my imagination on how his story had played out. For me, Ember was a little lighter than the previous books. Bee was such a breath of fresh air. She is so innocent, alive, fun and carefree. Her character was very perfect being a freshman on the mafia world.
Bee's light had complemented Phoenix's dark. When I thought Phoenix's demons will be hard to infiltrate through, Bee made it look easy peasy. Though Phoenix resisted with all his might, he just couldn't withstand Bee's constant cuteness. Bee's trust had made my heart ached so much. It was her most precious characteristic that was perfect to crumble Phoenix's walls.
"I believe in you, she blurted, tears in her eyes. "I just... I want you to know that despite everything... I believe in you."
Love so hot. Despite everything that had went on the mafia family in this book, Bee and Phoenix chemistry withstand them all. Scorching, hot love between them was very present and Phoenix will surely make a run for Nixon, Chase and Tex's money.
"I don't do warm fuzzies."
Well, we can't win 'em all.
"I do scorching blazes," he muttered under his breath. "That sear you alive."
Rachel Van Dyken never fails to make her readers beg for another book, and another, and another. And with all the twists and turns, I think it's safe to say that no one can stop her in writing more amazing books for this story, can we?
Ember is Phoenix De Lange's book. This man is a killer, a rapist, an abuser, a ghost, an enforcer, and a MONSTER. He has betrayed the family. He has betrayed himself. A death sentence is too easy and too painless for Phoenix De Lange. Redemption is impossible. Or is it?
Phoenix De Lange never stood a chance in life or in the family. He was a monster by birth. His father made him a horrific human being. His actions betrayed the family. He almost killed Nixon Abandonato's ( the head leader of the families in the United States) woman, Trace Rooks (granddaughter of the Alfero family). His betrayal brought the Luca Nicolosi, leader of the original Sicilian family to the States to decide the fate of all five families. This should of been his death sentence. Luca Nicolosi issued a verdict worse than death. He made Phoenix De Lange a ghost, an enforcer, a protector, and a leader. He saw that there was redemption in Phoenix De Lange's soul. He saw the man that was buried deep beneath the hideous surface. He saw a man with that craved absolution. He gave him a second chance.
Phoenix De Lange may still be physically alive and breathing but in his heart he is a dead man. He cannot forgive himself for his past. He will put his life on the line every time a family member is threatened. He will sacrifice himself before he allows any harm to come to his family and friends. He does not expect his family to forgive or forget. He continually punishes himself for his past. He is a haunted man without any hope. He does not understand why Luca chose him to lead the Nicolosi family. He does not understand why Luca gave him the key to all of the family secrets. He does not understand why Luca gave him Bee Campisi ( the Cappo's, Tex Campsisi, little sister) to protect. He hates that he wants her. She is sunshine and rainbows. She is everything good. She is everything he does not deserve... and she loves him. Can he stay away from her and keep her untainted from his ugliness? Or will she be the final nail in his coffin?
There is a storm brewing within the family. The Russian's are on the horizon. They are threatening the family. The FBI is knocking on their door. The Family is about to be destroyed. Someone in the family is betraying them all. Phoenix knows who it is, after all he knows all the family secrets. Can he save the family? Can he keep Bee from be touched by the war that is coming. Will he have to kill a man that is one of his brothers? Will he walk out with his heart as cold as it was or will he succumb to his true feelings for Bee?
Luca saw redemption within Phoenix's soul. Now it is up to Phoenix to rise from the ashes and soar.
The war is coming. The Russians are at the door. One man will be sacrificed for his betrayal. One man will pay the price. Welcome to the family...blood in...no out.
The Eagle Elite series is a complex and intricately woven series. There are plots within plots. Each book features a different family and the individual members. They are tightly connected to all the characters throughout the series. The grand plot grows throughout each book. Ember cannot be read as a stand alone book. Phoenix De Lange's story began in Elite and has progressed throughout the first four books in the series.
Phoenix De Lange is a character that has been quite a force throughout this series. In the beginning he was a monster that deserved to be hated. He proved that there many layers in his persona. He has evolved from being the devil himself to a broken man. My heart broke for him. I wanted him to find a slice of happiness that could be his and only his. Rachel gave him a life worth living and a future to look forward to.
Ember set up the next book in the Eagle Elite Series. The next book is Elude, will release in July 2015. It is going to be a shocker.
