For failing to uphold her end of the bargain Ella’s “wicked” stepmother Grace now walks the world on four paws. Her husband Peter has become the village huntsman to save his wife from the villagers. And his son from his wife.
Will Grace remember who she is as she is drawn to the boy? Will she find her way back to Peter? And how exactly do you lift a Fairy Queen’s curse?
This adult retelling of Red Riding Hood weaves several classic fairytales together with a splash of darkness, can be read as a standalone novel and is aimed at an adult audience (heat level: mild). For those who wanted to know how Prince Charming’s parents got together, keep an eye out for a nested story of Belle and Beast.

About the author

Sky is a USA Today bestselling indie author who writes quirky romantasy and retold fairytales with dry humour where secrets are peeled back like onions. So far, Thumbelina has been updated for suspicious adults, a more sinister version of Cinderella was released on 21.12.20; an adult Red Riding Hood was released on 21.03.21; and a Wizard of Oz retelling emerged on 21.06.21. A secret eco-warrior, she has co-published several charity anthologies that collect funds in support of our oceans, rainforests and communities touched by wildfires. All her books are linked by some character or another and sometimes, in her standalones, she likes to make you choose, depending on your disposition (optimist vs pessimist) - 'coz the path that awaits depends on the decisions we take. (Well, except in the Magic Mirrors saga aka Cinders-Embers-Ash trilogy - because only Douglas Adams could pull off a trilogy in 5 parts.) She lives in Tallinn, Estonia, in a house with a small garden with her husband and mostly one, but on occasion plus four kids. No dog.
Besides fairytales, Sky keeps experimenting with different genres: myths&legends; steampunk; post-apocalyptic scifi; quirky fantasy romance and alternative history to name a few that are currently in the works.

This was an interesting combo of Peter and the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood with hints of the other stories expanded elsewhere (Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Hansel and Gretel, and even a hint of Thumbelina) without leaving us with huge questions--except one: what happened to the wolf pack??
What I loved about this book
The dialog is quick and snappy. It moved me along in the story quickly and kept the characters real and engaging.
The way the characters in these stories are twisted is a really unique and fresh take on the classics. I adored that they are all together in one world and interacting.
There are some really cool Fairy Tale concepts (that reminded me of the TV show “Once Upon a Time”), but Sommers does more than building on the archetypes already baked into these characters. She gives them entirely new motivations, and it really pulled on the heartstrings. My favorite was Grace, who sacrificed so much for her son, Henry.
What I wanted a little more of…
I must admit, I’m an epic fantasy nut. If you’ve read my books, you’re going to realize that I enjoy things to be built up in a visual way until they explode. I want to go deeper into the world and feel like I’m living beside these characters. This is a quick read, and that’s great for many, many people. But…what I really relish in novels is enjoying the world and setting. I suppose I’ll have to read the others to get that taste.
Overall
I’d give this a 4.5 out of 5, but I’ll round up when I post this. These are super fun reads for those who like twisting the well-known tropes in Fairy Tales.

This is a very beautiful retelling or Red Riding Hood with a mix of other stories such Beauty and the Beast and Hansel and Gretel. It is told beautiful, just like classic fairy tale stories, but set as a modern tale. I loved how it was changed into a boy representing Red Riding Hood because he always liked wearing the color red, and how he accepted the wolf and wanted to befriend her. As some who tries to support wolf activism (I literally just got a ding from my email from Grand Canyon Wolves as I wrote that haha), I appreciate not making wolves be the bad guy.
This is a continuation of a series, and I haven't gotten a chance to read the first book, but one could easily read this as a standalone if they wanted to. The only problems I had were that sometimes it was a little hard to follow and I got confused what exactly the conflict was. All in all though, it is a great beach read, lazy summer afternoon read, or a read next to a fire (depending on where you live, it's hot here). I recommend to anyone who enjoys fairy tales.
It didn't take me long to devour this book either, and I once again found myself with a sudden case of "where did the book disappear to?" as I read the last pages. In this book we follow Cinderella's stepmother again as she deals with the side effects from her decision in the first book.
This fairytale retelling of the little red riding hood is one of those reads where you can just relax with a cup of your favorite hot beverage and truly enjoy yourself, and even if you get a bit of a feeling of it being that middle book in a trilogy where there is a bit of a lull because it is building up towards something bigger, the story pulls you in and you hope for a happy ending for the stepmom and her guy. I really enjoyed myself reading it and it was a good book to just relax with.
Would I read it again? Definitely. I have enjoyed myself with this series so far and I'm looking forward to the next book in it.

Sky Sommers' continues her highly original fairy tale series and this one doesn't disappoint. Masterful weaving together of all the different fairy tales with deep, believable and consistent characters and completely unpredictable plot line. There are so many fairy tale mashups, but I'm yet to read any that have the feel and unpredictability of this series. The characters are so well developed, they feel real.
The story continues, focusing mainly on Grace, Peter and Henry, but fear not, Grizella, Ella, Nick, Tim, Belle, Hans and Greta are all still here. Enter Morgana. There are still plenty of mysteries and back stories to explore, and we learn much more about Tom and Belle's Beauty and the Beast back story.
There are shifters, dragons, curses, Baba Yaga's witch house on chicken legs, magic table cloths and a gritty reality to the characters lives.
Highly recommended.
