I admire the women who chose to tell their stories, which span from sexual assault to 'slut' shaming to religious suppression of sexuality. There are also stories about asexuality, 'kinky' desires, spousal sex addiction, and sex after menopause. Not to be missed is an excellent opening by McLaughlin about her own struggles with life-threatening anorexia, excessive exercise, and poor sexual self-image during her modeling days. While her time spent in Paris should have been exhilarating and adventurous, it was instead filled with pain and despair. Her experiences are well worth a book of their own.
Definitely an eye-opening, intriguing, and well-developed collection.
It is the rare day that goes by that I do not remember a story or look to my "embraceable" document of inspirational quotes. On so many days, these women help me turn on the light.
Every once in a while, a book stops me in my tracks, put everything else down and just read. An author shows up with a story that dives straight to the heart of learning about love and understanding sex. This book came to me at just the right time, as all good books do.
Earlier this year, August McLaughlin, host and creator of Girl Boner published Embraceable, Empowering Facts and True Stories About Women’s Sexuality. This collection of lovingly curated stories unveils truths behind sexual repression, sexual curiosity, post traumatic love making, divorce, sex addiction, motherhood and masturbation. August’s mission with her podcast series, Girl Boner and Embraceable is to teach us what we didn’t learn in sex ed. She and I are obviously soul sisters on this journey.
This is a must have for your bookshelf. I have both the Kindle and the hard copy and every time I open it, it is to the right page of inspiration, affirmation and education I need.
