My job is straightforward. Buy a girl. Make her mine. Infiltrate a human-trafficking ring and take it down. There's only one rule. Don't fall for the girl. But when have I ever followed rules?
Who do you hire to save innocent women from monstrous men?
You find a man the monsters fear.
My job is straightforward. Buy a girl. Make her mine. Be the monster other men fear.
Fight for good by doing wrong? Yeah, it doesn't make any sense to me either.
It doesn’t matter which unfortunate girl I choose. Sacrifice one to save the many, or some such nonsense like that. Does that justify what I must do? Does that make me a hero?
No. It makes me a monstrous man.
But it needs to be done, and I'm not being given a choice.
I don’t want to know her name. I’m not her savior. I’m not her knight in shining armor galloping in on a white horse to save the day.
I’m her worst nightmare, a man who will break her so others may live.
There's only one rule. Don't fall for the girl.
But when have I ever followed rules?

Ten years after that fateful trip to Thailand, Josh is released from U.S. prison as a free man, but he is a brutal beast - a monster - with a record to prove it. He has served his time and paid his debt – earned his redemption. He has every intention of retiring to quietly live his life, trying to be a good man, but his family and his past won't let go. They claim he hasn’t been redeemed in their eyes, and he is forced to help bring down a human trafficking ring.
Clara, nineteen, wakes to discover she has been abducted. After she is sold to a faceless bidder, she is escorted to a holding room. While awaiting her new owner, her two guards decide to sample the merchandise – a deadly mistake. When a strange man with the beauty and presence of an avenging angel tears into the room and assesses what is about to go down, he lashes out against Clara's assailants. She intrinsically knows this stranger is her new owner and she should rightfully fear him, yet his fierce protectiveness comforts her. She knows it is wrong, but she is attracted to the man despite his brutality.
Josh and Clara’s story is a very slow burn. Despite their roles as master and slave, Josh and Clara have immediate chemistry. Josh's pain and self-loathing are replaced with obsessive thoughts of Clara. They maintain a complicated balance as Josh trains Clara to be his slave. Although he saved her from being purchased by someone with worse intentions, Josh struggles to do what needs to be done – to break Clara and turn her into a perfect slave – thereby cementing his cover story. She can’t know the truth without risking the operation. Clara’s acceptance doesn't sit well with him. He would rather she hate him for the monster he is. But it is eventually Clara’s belief in forgiveness and her undeserved love for Josh that give him a reason to hope that he might one day forgive himself. The couple eventually earns their HFN!
Although this may be read as a stand-alone, fans of book one of the series will be very pleased to read more about their favorite characters. FBI agent Ben Chambers plays a role throughout most of the book. A decent amount of the last half of the book is spent on Xavier's island, and Raven's father, Carson, plays a role again.
This is a dark read that does the unthinkable: it redeems a rapist and murderer by providing context and access to his thoughts. The POV alternates between Josh and Clara. It is well-written and smart. The plot is complex and the story is plot-driven. It does begin to drag during Clara’s training, however. The characters are nicely developed. Josh's story humanizes him. He did horrible things, but he is a good man. Clara has a huge heart and the ability to see Josh for who he really is. Forest's shy character in this book does not ring true when compared to confident and assertive Forest in book one, unfortunately. His story is the next and final installment in the series, so this alteration likely sets him up for that story. I rate this book four stars.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The words are consuming and I had difficulties putting this book down.
The characters are not flawless but human. This topic is still also reality in today’s world, while it shouldn’t . There were pages when couldn’t hold my tears. I haven’t read many books this good. I highly recommend this book series.
I can absolutely recommend this book

but one major flaw. In the books 1-3 The main characters, identical twins Jake and Josh had dark hair and blue eyes but in the books 4-6 they had jade green eyes. I know that may be trival considering the topic of the books but I like consistency in my series. Other then that, they are all great reads.

One for sure, can’t wait a year for the next book in this series, will have to close the gap by rereading.
For an even deeper experience, you might want to read the trilogy Changing Roles by Ellie's Masters first, not to mention the Angel Fire series.
