There has been criticism of the graphic, gratuitous violence and sexual depictions in the novel. Though if fact is stranger than fiction, the violence and sex may have been toned down from actual events.
The story is gripping, suspenseful, horrific and hopeful. There is a semblance of compassion and humanity in every character. Yet if one is trying to find a political ideology in the subtext, it is that violence on both sides is destructive, destablizing and personally tragic for all involved.
