This fantastic debut novel sets the scene of a wonderful new world for readers to explore and gives you characters you can't stop thinking about even when the book has come to a close. The end of the book will leave you scouring the internet for the next book's release date! Seriously can't wait for "Sunstone's Secret" to come out! At least there's a sneak peek in the back of Emerald's Fracture and we have a title to keep an eye out for!
I found it to be a great, relaxing read at the end of a long day of overtime. The development of the characters and their journey to end the monster of a plague wiping out their island drew me in. I found myself going over the story even when I wasn't reading it, trying to pick out the thing that would give it all away. (I never did. Not a very good detective/plague curer as it turns out.)
This book fills out the world and sets the stage for the rest of the series. It does start slow but picks up the pace and by the end I was dying to know what happens next. Did I mention it's funny? Because it is definitely funny. Plus there is an awesome dog. And kissing. What I'm saying is, it has all the good things.
I am very much looking forward to the next book.
First off, there is a free prequel novella that I recommend reading first, it introduces the world and the main characters.
I really enjoyed this world, it felt new in a genre flooded with a hundred Hunger Games/Twilight rip-offs. The characters feel real and flawed. Natalie though strong and talented; is still just 18. Her age shows in her actions, self doubt and ease of tears.
I really look forward to the next book and following our heroes as they mature their relationship and path to self discovery.
This new author has done a nice job of blending mystery, action, and romance. She has created characters you can identify with, a landscape of setting that is vibrant, and a storyline that has you turning pages to see what happens next.
I couldn’t believe when the book ended and I can’t wait for the second book in the trilogy which now has a title: “Sunstone’s Secret”. Also, get the free short story prequel to this book called, “Emerald’s Sentinel” which gives a background to this book.
The characters are all well written, tangible and relatable - each character shows depth of personality showing humanity in their flaws and path to evolve their personalities from their experiences within the story. Kate has also created great tension between her main characters which makes you hold your breath at key moments and read faster to the next chapter (because you don't want to skip a page!). I actually found myself quite annoyed when I realized I had read the last page because I was not ready for the story to end and I can't wait to see what happens next!
