In the Emergence of One American Nation, Donald J. Fraser explores the difficulties that the founding generation confronted in molding the United States into one nation. At the heart of that endeavor was the effort to create and ratify a new Constitution for the country, one to replace the failed Articles of Confederation. Sometimes it is good to look to history to remind us of the sacrifices and the compromises that our founders painfully offered so that we now have the benefit of living in this great experiment, The United States of America. Donald J. Fraser in The Emergence of One American Nation succinctly and skillfully opens the door to that past in this wonderfully researched and organized history of the founding of America, the fight for a workable government and the men who tirelessly argued their way to the compromise that became The Constitution and The Bill of Rights. (Argued and compromised – it seems our founders understood that both are needed for good government.) One of the most enjoyable aspects of the book is Fraser’s balance between the personal and the political. His choice of personal background information of the founders is well balanced with their political motivation and belief. Fraser draws information from a wealth of biographers and historians and relays it in a concise and entertaining read. Some of the diary entries are downright funny as when William Pierce of Georgia describes Roger Sherman of Connecticut as “the oddest shaped character I ever remember to have met…” The inclusion of these little anecdotes is what makes this history fun! A refresher course on the founding of the nation or an introduction to the history of America, this is a must read for anyone wishing to understand America.

I like the way he puts citations at the end of each chapter, so you can review the sources without losing track of where you are. He writes about what might be a dry topic to some but uses fresh language that brings the history to life. I appreciate the renewed opportunity to re-read about American history since the subject was so dry and outdated to my younger self.

This book covers the politics that lead to the break with Britain, the confederacy, the framing of the constitution, and the battle for adoption of the constitution. It covers the philosophical and geographical/financial underpinnings of both sides of the debates as well as the involvement and influence of key people. This leads to a discussion of the processes that led to the formation of the two party system in the U.S. This final discussion is, in my opinion, underdeveloped. Other than that, an excellent book.

The Emergence of One American Nation: The Revolution, the Founders, and the Constitution, by Donald J. Fraser is a well-researched book that chronicles the upward struggle of the US from a mere 13 Colonies to one grand nation, united only by the words in the Constitution. It is an easy-to-read history lesson that answers one basic question, why are we a nation? The books informs and entertains, and is well-written and organized. Fraser does a great job of documenting our founder’s personal backgrounds concerning their political beliefs and motivations. Fraser explains that the turmoil that existed early on in our nation’s history still echoes today. It is a very thorough examination of the many factors that founded the US. Highly recommended to anyone who loves history, and for everyone else who has forgotten the struggles, dreams and ambitions of our founder fathers in their quest for liberty and personal freedom. My only complaint is that there was so much to cover, some of the problems and issues were minimized. Other than that, great book.

I really enjoyed Mr. Fraser's book. The insightful look he gives us into the forces at play during the founding of the United States of America helped me gain a better understanding of what it is to be an American. There were many surprises and plenty of drama in this account of the colonial and revolutionary periods and up to the actual writing of the documents that have given our nation its founding guidelines. I highly recommend it to anyone who has the slightest interest in U.S. history and its politics.
