Socialcomputing and the medium of social networks are creating a revolution that is similar to the industrial revolution of the 19th century in its impact on commerce, but on a global scope. This communication revolution includes the development of advanced communications tools and proxies, such as Skype.

Today politics, products, and services are virtually consumer/prosumer/user-led developments. Google is a major example of a user-generated brand where the users have suggested and embraced enhancements. Current technology is so pervasive that it has become quite significant in the political realm. With cutting-edge communication systems, national political groups and institutions in the United States of America are lobbying with influential bloggers to inform and educate the voter, as well as impact public opinion. There is an opportunity for the global community of users, consumers, prosumers, citizens, consumer brands, corporations, non-governmental organizations, and governments to play a critical role in forging this new carbon-neutral economy, The Relationship Economy (Searls, 2007).

Social networking is here to stay. It's not just a fad waiting on "the next big thing." In fact, I think it IS the next big thing and will continue growing and changing into ever-increasing beneficial tools. However, social networks are just that; they are tools -- a hammer waiting upon a carpenter's arrival. We are the carpenters to these tools because we create and essentially become the content. Without the content, social networks are doomed for failure. It's first time in IT history when software has become dependent upon the user, rather than vice versa. This book discusses how relationships form through social networking tools and the economies they create in the process. It's recommended reading for anyone developing social networking tools or just interested in the social networking phenomenon.

De auteurs van The Cluetrain Manifesto, waarin de stelling 'markets are conversations' werd geponeerd, pakken door in The Emergence of the Relationship economie. Zij zien dit als "The people and things we are connected with in our personal networks, who or that distribute or consume our capital, which in turn influences our individual production outputs.".
