I cracked the arm 600 revolutions in 5 minutes which is some pretty serious work, but no big deal. I changed hands every 100 cracks. I'm fit, 35 year old male. I powered phone on and was able to call 4 people and got voicemail, none of them picked up. The phone read 3% and stayed on for 4 minutes before turning off.
This would be enough time to call for help if needed while hiking or if power ever went it for an extended period. If I really wanted to charge the phones battery, I could take a break in between 5 minute sessions and probably get it up to 10% in 5 sessions or so, in theory, given my simple experiment.
-Durable (Probably can be dropped a few times without having to worry about it breaking.)
-Made in the USA!
-Does what it says it will do
-If you don't crank it at the standard rpm for even a second it becomes very difficult to play catch up with the generator.
-Relatively large (I don't know if I was expecting something smaller in my mind, but this thing is pretty large and takes up a decent amount of space in a backpack(which is a big deal if you're a backpacker/hiker using one.))
Overall, it is a great product and I highly recommend it to anyone who lives in an area of the world that experiences power outages, or just anybody who needs to be able to charge their cell phone wherever they are at, no matter where that's at.
The device includes a main body and a crank handle that rotates relative to the main body. The crank handle has an arm and a rotatable knob on the end of the arm. The knob folds into the arm when storing the device. When not in use, this generator can be collapsed to 6.5” x 2.25”. The edges are rounded and the contours of the device make it comfortable to grip and hold during use.
The crank turns easily, especially once you get it going after a few revolutions. The instructions provide explain how to properly use the Pocket Socket. I found that the secret to successful use is to keep the rotation going at a steady and constant RPM that is comfortable to maintain. We recently lost power for four days, and I was able to keep necessary electronics topped off and usable. After a little practice, and finding your rhythm it is not hard to operate the generator long enough to get a decent amount of charge. With my iPhone, I found that I am able to generate enough energy to increase 1-2% in about 2-3 minutes of steady cranking.
I would highly recommend this device for everyone to keep available as an emergency source of power. We are way too dependent on electricity devices these days to not own something like this.
In the future, having a rubber grip on the device and handle would be nice. Making it easier to keep it constant without changing "gears" would be very nice. Maybe adding an accessory to grip the device while you turn the handle would be great, so you can use two hands to turn.
