Kern opens his book with a look at eh essentials to survive disaster - food, water, shelter, fire and first aid - and asks that the reader survey the types of emergencies that could affect your location. He then probes into each for the fundamentals listed, sharing what to look for, how to be sure you are obtaining the correct supplies, how to store these in preparation for disaster, the ins and outs of water purification, securing a remote survival home (who would have considered this before Kern mentions it?) and considering natural shelters, and how to conserve and ignite fire and fuels, and the ins and outs of basic first aid - including what to look for in an injured person (shock, CPR, myocardial infarction).
He then moves to emergency preparedness - how to evaluate and assemble kits and materials, what tools and details are imperative, how to make a family emergency preparedness Kit, etc. Decisions to assist in evacuation plans follow as well as how to survive in the atmosphere of emergency situations (clothing, what to avoid, dealing with extreme cold or extreme heat, what to do incase of floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, tsunamis, solar flares and magnetic storms, pandemics, house fires, volcanic eruptions - these are all discussed in detail.
Kern ends his book with practical lists to keep handy and to be always prepared, lists that not only suggest supplies, but also give instructions and number spaces to list people and agencies to contact for assistance. And as a finale, he gives lists of websites for all the resources that are available for assisting in time of emergencies! No home or person should be without this excellent resource.
