Setting this up was easy. I opened the package and searched for directions, but came up short (later I saw that there are directions on the bottom of the front label). Without directions, I opened the mylar material and figured to thread the string through the middle since it is a large circle of fabric. I then tied the ends to two trees (too high at first, 3 feet off the ground is best), and I was done.
I then crawled in. It was a rather windy day, so I closed the ends around me (leaving a breathing hole) and lay down. The material was close next to me instead of suspended away from my body, as the product images show, which warmed me up very quickly. I was warm and the wind couldn’t touch me. It worked.
Thin and light for carrying in the bottom of a pack.
Thin mylar material, yet it didn’t rip or tear at all.
Large enough for two people to cuddle close and stay alive.
None that I can think of.
This did exactly what it is supposed to. I would have liked it to have an air mattress and a real blanket, but that would defeat the idea of it being an emergency item that is painless to carry in your backpack. I received this survival tent in exchange for a real and honest review. I actually tested it out, which is totally obnoxious because it will now never fit back into the tiny bag that it came in. It is reusable, but folding it back into the original size is not practical.
*What is different about this than if I were to just use a reflective emergency blanket and my own rope or paracord?
Imagine lying two emergency blankets on one another and sealing it on two opposite sides. That's what this product is similar to (although see the product description for size comparisons to other emergency blankets). The instructions included on the package are very easy to follow, as is hanging this tent up. You just lay the tent out flat on the ground, slide the rope through it on one side, then tie each end of the rope to something to hang the tent. There is nothing to attach the bottom of the tent to the ground, you just crawl inside and your body is what holds it down to the ground. Also, since it's hanging with you inside, it would do a lot better at protecting you from the elements than only a blanket wrapped around you would.
*How well will it really pack, especially after being used?
I posted pictures to compare the size of the tent when folded to a deck of cards. I will say that while it looks nice and neatly folded prior to using it (although I had to use an elastic hair band to hold it folded), after being used it was difficult to fold because of the type of material. That being said, I sort of expected it since I've used this material before for emergency blankets and figured that might be the case.
*How roomy is it; will it really fit two people as advertised or would I need to get more than one or a different product to meet our needs?
When set up with the rope, I was surprised how functional it was in terms of fitting multiple people. You can really decide how wide you want to make it and therefore how many people you want to fit by how high or low you tie the rope from the ground. My husband and I and our little girl could fit just fine if we tied the rope to something a little lower to the ground. If you have a bigger family, perhaps get more than one.
*How durable is it, particularly the rope that is included?
The tent itself feels plenty durable. My 2 year old played with it and it didn't rip which is saying alot. The rope feels a bit cheap at first glance but it's braided sort of like paracord so when you pull it, it feels very strong.
I did get this product for free for my honest review and since I depend so heavily on reviews when I buy products I wanted to answer the questions buyers might have. Overall, I actually really liked this product and would recommend it for an emergency kit, although I am giving it 4 stars mainly because there is no way to tack it to the ground unless you're in it or you get creative and do a make shift stake system.
