Editorial Reviews

Review

Here is one of those fine recordings that belongs in every serious wind band/ensemble conductor s collection. Harvey Pittel, one of America s foremost classical saxophonists, and the outstanding University of Texas Wind Ensemble under the direction of Jerry Junkin join forces to perform two major compositions, Karel Husa s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Band and David Maslanka s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble. When Husa composed his three movement Concerto in 1968, it was a major challenge for both soloist and band, which explored new possibilities for the solo saxophone as well as new effects and colors for the wind band. Typical of the Husa s compositions of this period, it is a synthesis of his previous experimental styles with the formal clarity of neo-classicism, the expressive qualities of Czech folk music, the intricate move relationships of serialism, and an unending fascination with unusual instrumental techniques and combinations. If you are unfamiliar with Maslanka s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble, it consists of three songs and two interludes and is, as the composer writes, more intimate than symphonic. Although the work is in now way program music, it does have spiritual implications with numerous quotes from Bach chorales and from the composer s own religious compositions. Maslanka readily admits that a five movement, forty-five minute concerto is a good deal longer than one might reasonably want. However, he goes on to explain that, As I got into the composing, the ideas became insistent; none of them would be left out. At least this writer is very glad for that, although he is not a saxophonist who has to contend with the endurance problems involved in performing this monumental work. This is a recording of great music played by a wonderful soloist and a great wind ensemble under the direction of a first class conductor. It is a recording you will enjoy. --WASBE Newsletter
