My neighbor got me into baking bread in this type of Dutch oven. The pot is of good construction and I hope it lasts a long time. I will mention my neighbors pot looks like the description where the emblem on the top cover is white. Mine is fully glazed over in the red. Its a small point to make but it makes me wonder what other shortcuts were done. I have this item in the red as well as the charcoal color.

This Dutch oven isn't heavy like cast-iron ones. It distributed heat well. Very pleased with how well the bread turned out. It doesnt over cook the bottom as much as my cast-iron Dutch ovens have.

It hold the steam in well and provides a nice ear on the top.

Pricey but worth it

I use this for baking fresh Artisan loaves of bread and I get a perfect loaf every time. I’ve had it up to 4750 with no problems. To get a nice oven spring on your bread you need moisture during the first 20 minutes of so which means you need a pot with a good fitting lid that can take extreme temps. This does the job with the added bonus of looking good on the counter top when not in use. I have not cooked other things in it, so can only comment on the bread. Because I use Parchment paper there is almost no clean up, and what there is has been a breeze. Previously I was using a cast Iron Dutch oven from a major manufacturer and it also did a great job on the bread, but it was twice the weight and more difficult to work with – very pleased with this purchase.

I've been looking for a 4qt cast iron Dutch oven to bake bread in as my two current ones are too small and too big. I finally gave in and purchased this one even though it is clay and not cast iron. My first impression was luke warm and now its low. Since I've 'used' the pot I won't be able to return it so now I'll make the best of it and consider it a $100 big mistake. I have not baked bread in it, I'm concerned about the handles on the side. The are difficult to grasp with pot holders and I bake bread at 477-500 degress!! The lid handle is also difficult to grasp with pot holders. The pot is not to be heated empty in the oven, another problem for bread baking. I had it for two weeks before I decided to go ahead and prep it for use. The prep is to heat milk to a boil then simmer for 5 minutes in the pot on the stove top. I followed the directions to a T and still the milk burned, cleaning it was NOT a snap. I soaked it in vinegar water for 2 hours and still the burn was more difficult than it should have been.
I will not be recommending this 'stew pot' to anyone.

Love this dutch oven! Can't say enough about it. Anyone who cooks and bakes, knows that this is an heirloom item, if you can take care of it over time. It' can take upwards of 800 degrees, but not home oven or recipe that I know of needs that kind of temp, but it's good to know that this can handle heat. Follow the instructions to season before you use and you should not have any issues with the Dutch Oven. Don't follow the instructions to season before you use is your own risk and don't say you weren't warned. Emile Henry are expensive cook/bake ware, take care of them and you will have them for a lifetime.

I bought the first one from Amazon warehouse for about $71. Big mistake. Someone somewhere had substituted an oval cast iron pot. I bought the second one new and it was perfect. Another opportunity came to buy a used one--thinking it couldn't happen again, I pulled the trigger because I could gift it to Auntie Em--when I picked up the box I heard a lot of pieces plinking about and tried to remember if I ordered a Lego set. I'm certain it broke either in transit or earlier. It went back to Amazon. Sorry, Auntie Em, I'll buy you a new one. You'll love it

This pot is one of the best pots I have ever owned. Unfortunately for me, while heating the pot in my oven at 450 degree in preparation for some bread baking, as I lifted the hot lid, I dropped it onto the pot. I could not believe my eyes, my favorite and most adored pot was no more. What was I to do? I wrote a letter to Emile Henri, explained my situation and they sent me a new pot. With this kind of customer service how can one not buy this pot. It cooks great, bread or stews while at the same time looking great! Do not hesitate.

This is a great pot for making levain bread from the Flour Water Salt Yeast book. I preheated it empty for 45 minutes at 475° with no problems. It did give off a foul odor while preheating. I believe it was the sticker on the pot that I did not remove before baking. When I took the pot out of the oven, the sticker wasn't there anymore. The red color also took on a much darker hue after baking and has stayed that color. I didn't like the other colors that were offered but I wasn't sure how a red pot would look in my modern kitchen. I'm so glad I decided on the red because it looks beautiful. I would recommend.

I have only used this on stove top so that accounts for the Versatility rating. Starting with a low heat and then increasing heat gradually there are a number of bubbles that appear on the outside of the pot. I find this really takes away from the smell of the cooking - since it is only the smell of burning on the outside that seems to dominate.
Not sure how to fix this - which accounts for the not easy to clean rating.
I would return this but threw out the box and not sure how to ship it back.

Un très grand carton a été déposé par le facteur, à l'intérieur le colis Emile Henry qui s'y baladait bien emballé avec une bonne couche de plastic-bulles. Déception lors du déballage le couvercle est cassé. Je n'ai pas le choix je dois renvoyer tout le colis pourtant je suis prête à ne renvoyer/recevoir que le couvercle mais ce n'est pas prévu en ligne...Malheur il n'y en a plus en stock (pour l'instant ?)....
