It's about time everyone brushed up on their etiquette. I love this update because it's au courant. I purchased this to find out Emily Post's answer to bringing a guest to a wedding who wasn't invited and for which "and guest" was not written on the envelope. (It's not proper). I consider my manners and behavior good, and within the first few paragraphs, I read something I'd forgotten. When someone says "Thank you", the proper response is "You're welcome". We've gotten so we say "And thank YOU", which is not appropriate. That removes the appreciation from one person and takes it back to yourself. I learned the order of introductions, which I'd forgotten. These little things are big in common courtesy and show you up as someone who cares about the comfort of others. I love it that the book includes cell phone etiquette. It stays on my coffee table for ready reference (and as a subtle reminder), and I firmly believe it to be a "must" for all households, especially in this time of Millenials whose spelling is in acronyms (BTW, LOL) and watch their cell phones constantly. This is not a criticism, but as Amy Vanderbilt would say, "Gentle reader, conversation is indeed an art that one must practice, or it shall be lost". The book is a little pricey and very large, and is an investment everyone should make.

I like grandaughter, Peggy Post's revision of this timeless book on Etiquette better than the one my mom had of Peggy Post's grandmother Emily. Much more down to earth, not so stiff and stuffy. Properness, yes, but also good old commonsense. Very excellent reference book for all those special occassion affairs we all tend to wonder what to wear and how to be as gracious a guest as we envison ourselves being (even if we feel so jittery inside we're sure everyone can hear our jitters rattling like baby rattle). Confidence for any occassion or life circumstance can only be aqcquired if we know how to handle it without offending others...this book shows, tells, informs what to do, how to dress, how to act for all those life situations we might feel unsure about. Excellent! I give the children and grandchildren of Emily Post a standing ovation on improving on what Emily origianlly created...which was also excellent for it's time and place in our society.

I absolutely love this book. It helped me know how to behave in situations where before I bought it would give me anxiety because I had no idea what was expected of me by other people. You may say etiquette is dead, but it isn't - it just isn't taught anymore but still runs deep in the way we act or are expected to act. It taught me that a lot of what I'd done was rude, and had no idea I was being rude! It's amazing. It really will help you make more harmonious social situations in all areas of your life.

This book is worth the price! It's BEAUTIFUL! Not to mention it is FILLED with practical, useful, even fun advice! I bought the book when it was suggested by a friend, but I was incredibly skeptical that it would be relevant- I was wrong. :) I intended on using it as a coffee book table, thinking it would spend a lot of time sitting around- when in fact, I've referenced the book countless times since it arrived! :) Weddings, Facebook- any social situation you can name- its in there! Some may argue the price is a little steep- but I believe you get what you pay for and this is the prefect example. Add it to your cart- you won't regret it!

I purchased this for my 14 year old son who's manners were less than to be desired. It was great! I beleave that it should be mandatory reading for all teens, this up to date verson is much easier to read than what my mother made me read 20 years ago. I think with every geration we are loosing our manners and forgetting what is expected in a civialized society. I really liked it on my Kindle Fire because I was able to highlight the area's that I wanted him to read rather than have him reading the whole book ( I'm sure wedding planning is not anything he will need soon )

At first I was beyond myself with excitement when this book finally arrived. Then I started reading it and was disappointed to see that the beautiful use of the English language and the firm but encouraging tone that characterized earlier editions of Etiquette was not present. I understand that the authors were being colloquial in order to be more "accessible", but it left me quite apathetic as opposed to inspired to be the very best that I could be. Also, etiquette by its very nature is quite conservative, and this book most certainly is not.

Overall it's a good resource, and I mainly wanted this book for the reference material in the back (which, by the way, is extremely useful and the made the entire purchase worth my money), but it was very disappointing to see how our society has become so inelegant that even Emily Post Etiquette has succumbed. Aside from practical advice on technology, I would stick with the 17th Edition by Peggy Post alone.

The authors provide invaluable advice on everything one could ever think of, including "sticky salesperson situations," official protocols, "the art of small talk," sending cards and replying to invitations (including social, business, and other), the job interview, attending different kinds of celebrations (baby showers, quinceañera, debutante balls, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, services of other faiths), weddings and engagement, and so much more. Now that I have it I can't imagine life without it. It's a really great resource for all.
