Are you a fantsy lover? Then you'll love it.
The first thing I do when I pick up any book is to read the dedications. I want to know about an author before I decide I want to devote my valuable time to reading something that person has written. The dedication alone made me want to read the book. Apparently this book was written for the author's daughter and his dedication made my heart melt. The author's foreword was full of humility and I felt he was a genuine storyteller and I decided he was worth my time.....and I am glad I did.
I sat my children down and started reading to them about children that lived in New Jersey, just as they did, and they were quickly transfixed.
The characters were so well developed that I felt as if I knew them...as though they were someone I wanted to know. The author was adept at bringing even the tiniest details to life.
The fantasy that was created in this book was so enveloping that I felt I was entering a whole new realm myself.
The story was intriguing enough that it was hard to put down at the end of each chapter. My children held their breath as their beloved characters faced certain doom, and cheered when they overcame the obstacles befalling them. Even the best of our guessers did not figure out the story line until it was read....making the story even more endearing. We were spellbound to the very last page!
My youngest son decided he could not wait for our family reading time and he took the book of our shelf and began to try to read the story by himself. This was a very wonderful moment for our family as he was never one to try to read and rarely wanted to join family reading time....but here he was reading on his own and wanting to read more!
We loved the book and we are looking forward to reading the next book in the series! Well done Irven Keppen...well done.
Emily is the oldest of four kids, a bookworm who can always be found buried in a book and always imagining different possibilities or impossibilities A very friendly child, caring and full of compassion, Emily is always looking out for her younger siblings, and loves to lead them in one game or another.
Devin, the second oldest, is the adventurous kid with a kind heart but devilish sense of humor. He often lands in trouble with his parents. Always playing with toy swords of any kind and the shields his dad makes for him, he is always running around, fighting imaginary monsters.
Brianna, the third child and youngest girl, is a mean-tempered, stubborn girl who has a very big known love for music and dance. Always prancing around the house to the music in her head, she is a tiny girl with a tiny voice whose smile could make anyone happy.
Aidan, the youngest of the four children, is a strong, fearless little boy with lots of energy who can always be found bonding with one of his older siblings. Whether dancing with Brianna, fighting monsters with Devin, or even reading with Emily, he is a ball of energy who loves his brother and sisters.
After Emily complains about how bored she is, her mom suddenly tells her to baby-sit her brothers and sister while she goes to run an errand. While sitting on the couch in the living room watching TV, with her brothers sitting there accompanying her, Brianna comes twirling into the room, right up to the big window overlooking their backyard and the edge of the forest their house is right next to.
Spotting some animals outside in their backyard, the children join Brianna. After begging and pleading, Emily decides to let everyone go outside to get a better look at the animals behind their house. After looking at the animals, they all follow a turtle deep into the forest and come out in a clear opening with a pond in the middle. And this is where their wild and crazy adventure begins.
With elves, unicorns, fairies, and nasty, super-violent creatures called Nooben, Emily, Devin, Brianna, and Aidan discover lands beyond their world that they never knew existed and thought were only real in fairy tales. Trapped and unable to get back home, they all must become heroes and find a strength within themselves they didn't know they had.
This is a good start to a fun read in a new adventure/fantasy series, perfect for middle school readers.

Emily, Devin, Brianna and Aidan are all brilliant characters, who find themselves in a strange land called Midralon. They encounter many different types of creatures, including sprites, gnomes, dwarves and elves, and succeed in forming a much-needed alliance. Their journey is one filled with courage and bravery, and the dangers that lie in wait within the lands of Midralon.
My favourite characters were the fairy Greenblade, elven Prince Relanor and Helgi the dwarf. I loved the descriptions of the creatures and landscapes, and found it really easy to visualise everything. Reading this book also made me wish I could visit Midralon myself, and meet one of the fantastical creatures the children come across. I can't think of anything more fun than having a feast with the elves in their tree, or learning to ride Stomper the white stag!
Irven Keppen has created a world that fans of The Chronicles of Narnia series will love, and one that both teens and adults alike will enjoy. After being left with a cliffhanger of an ending, I can't wait to see what will happen to the characters next. I just hope Devin can outrun any evil Nooben or warlocks that may be hot on his trail...
