So, this is not a 19th C. chicklit. It's an exciting YA contemporary fantasy in the Celtic myth genre. It also has science. Mixing fantasy with science usually means science fiction, so maybe it's a bit of that genre as well.
It is not, however, a mishmash. I had to get some traction with Emily. She seemed like a deliberate underachiever until you get to know her story. This is a girl who's keeping her head down and trying to survive an uncaring father and abusive aunt. She doesn't know she's from a long line of Celtic priestesses. Boy, howdy, when she finds out, she goes from slump-shouldered bad student to flaming-haired Celtic goddess. Nice transition.
Now that I've let you know this book is not what the title suggests and that its heroine has plenty of moxie and ambition, then you can patiently work your way through the first few chapters while Ms. Wright builds the background and story.
Trust me. You'll like Emily (eventually), and I'll be reading the continued Akasha Chronicles now that I know all about Emily.
I also loved the seamless blending of a fantasy world, with the real-life ones of Emily before she embarks on her journey. With lots of myths, magical creatures, clashes and good plot development going on, I read this in one sitting.
All in all, this is a wonderful story of a young girl coming to know herself through facing her own fears and doubts, while recognizing and accelerating her new-found strengths. A great YA novel.

Overall the writing was beautiful. The descriptions and the vivid images of the other worlds and other times came across beautifully. Natalie Wright is a rare writer; one who can tell you a story in detail with one a few paragraphs and you can perfectly picture it in your head.
