GUNNAR Computer glasses are designed to make your eyes not have to work so hard. Your eyes work hard all day and, spending hours in front of a digital device can be additionally hard on the eye muscles. GUNNAR'S exclusive design blocks blue light and reduces eyestrain while increasing contrast, protection, and focus. The result: improved clarity, comfort and performance.
How They Work
- Lens focusing power removes the eye muscle strain and keeps eyes feeling fresh.
- Amber lenses filter high frequency blue light that can cause both short-term and long-term issues.
- Frame and lens designs hold in humidity and reduce dry eyes and irritation to ease eye strain.
- Amber lenses add contrast to help sharpen characters and shapes on your screen.
- Anti-reflective lens coatings eliminate glare and visual distractions to the eye.
Digital Eye Strain also called Computer Vision Syndrome is a condition resulting from focusing the eyes on a computer screen for extended periods of time. Symptoms can include headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, fatigue, eye strain, dry eyes, irritated eyes, double vision, vertigo/dizziness, polyopia, and difficulty refocusing the eyes. These symptoms can be further aggravated by blue light exposure.
Blue light radiated from digital screens reaches deeper into the eye and its cumulative effect can cause damage to the retina and can cause the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Blue light has also been linked to cataracts and sleep disorders.
I recommend my patients take proactive measures to protect their vision from all the digital screens they look at. The easiest but most unrealistic solution is to stop or limit using digital devices. The realistic approach is to recommend or prescribe computer glasses to take that strain out of the eyes. Glasses with a slight amount of magnification to take the strain off the eyes along with anti glare and blue light tint to absorb the blue light emitted from electronics. -Dr Eric White O.D.
Blue light can cause:
- Age related macular degeneration
- Slower metabolism
- Disrupted melatonin levels

Although Gunnars promotes the high curve of their frames, 4 of my employees, who are licensed opticians, would recommend against it. 8 Base curve, which is what the G0005 is, can distort vision and actually contribute to headaches. Since the whole point of the glasses is to eliminate those I am surprised Gunnars would take this risk.
Regardless, these frames are moderately heavy, not to bad. I am very sensitive to weight. Any sort of pressure on my nose makes my eyes water. I seem to get by just fine with these frames. SO, positives and negatives:
1. Negative - Moderate weight (compared to other lighter options)
2. Positive - 4 - 6 base curve (moderate compared to other high curved framed)
3. Positive - Medium Size frame with easy to adjust nose pads
In the end, the frame is just fine and I was happy to pay the money.
Although I will add once more. YOU MUST BEGIN SHIPPING THESE WITH A BRANDED HARD CASE. I have nowhere to store them and refuse to pay additional when it absolutely should be included since you are making a ton of money on these. Your lenses are less than 10 cents and the frame is probably 7 - 12 dollars.
Purchase over 5,000 branded hard cases from China, direct, and the cost is less than $1.00 (i do it with my company)
NO EXCUSES Gunnars.
After daily use in office setting, they do not show any scratches. I had another popular pair that had a deep gouge the same day I opened the package, so this is a nice feature (true scratch resistance).
They do not make the whole world seem yellow so much as they make the whole world seem very blue when you take them off before your eyes can adjust. It's not an overwhelming tint, in other words. Yet, my eyes feel much more rested after long bouts of computer work.
They have just a hint of magnification. I was prescribed +.50 bifocals that are still too strong to be useful to me but the eye doctor felt that was necessary to reduce my eye strain. Turns out, the blue-light blocking of these and their minor magnification is exactly what I needed. Also, I required no adjustment, no "Okay, now I feel dizzy" periods - My eyes didn't have to get used to these glasses.
The price at $70-$80. But, you know, I have a $400+ pair of special coated, special material, graduated bifocal glasses from an eye doctor that don't feel any more expensive than these Gunnars and they actually do not help my eye strain and headaches like the Gunnars. The price feels fair to me comparatively.
Furthermore, one of my favorite things about gunnars is the frame. I typically don't wear glasses because most frames make my face look boxy or just don't fit (I have a wider head). However, I've been using the Emmissary for years. They're both function and give a good sharp look :)

I work in an office near Atlanta,GA that is filled with harsh fluorescent lighting and lots of computer equipment. I wear these glasses with a hat daily and have seen noticeable improvement in both my concentration, my mood, my work, and my energy level.
My workspace and gaming space at home are significantly darker than at the office but these have also helped while at home. Even watching Netflix is more enjoyable.
During my drive to work in the morning between 4 and 6 am, I wear these glasses. Not only do they help me concentrate on the road better but the insanely bright streetlights, headlights on cars (HIDs and LEDs) bother me significantly less.
The only con I have is that the frames on these are quite small. My head isn't wide by most standards (it's more oval) but that isn't a deal breaker for me.
