Emmanuel's Dream: The True Story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah Hardcover – Picture Book, January 6, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
Born in Ghana, West Africa, with one deformed leg, he was dismissed by most people—but not by his mother, who taught him to reach for his dreams. As a boy, Emmanuel hopped to school more than two miles each way, learned to play soccer, left home at age thirteen to provide for his family, and, eventually, became a cyclist. He rode an astonishing four hundred miles across Ghana in 2001, spreading his powerful message: disability is not inability. Today, Emmanuel continues to work on behalf of the disabled.
Thompson's lyrical prose and Qualls's bold collage illustrations offer a powerful celebration of triumphing over adversity.
Includes an author's note with more information about Emmanuel's charity.

About the authors

Sean Qualls finds inspiration everywhere. Growing up in the 70's in central New Jersey, his family didn't have much money for art supplies but he made the best of what was available; discarded paper, blank end pages from old books and sometimes walls much to his mother's chagrin. Some of his earliest inspirations were the crayons and coloring books his mom would buy for him and his older sister, drawing and handwriting competitions with classmates and an illustrated bible he received for Christmas in the 2nd grade.
Sean's books and illustrations often explore history and non-fiction subjects. His fine art focuses on race & identity and the intersection of history & mythology, ultimately examining how we create our own identities or allow them to be scripted to for us. Together his paintings and illustrations reveal simultaneously unique and universal moments that reveal the human spirit.
Sean has illustrated Emmanuel's Dream (Schneider Award recipient) written by Laurie Ann Thompson, Giant Steps to Change the World written by Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee and Before John Was a Jazz Giant (Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor) written by Carole Boston Weatherford. He lives in lives in Brooklyn where you can also find him DJing on occasion. View more of his art at SeanQualls.com

Laurie Ann Thompson grew up in rural northern Wisconsin and enjoyed a career in software engineering prior to becoming an author. She now lives between the mountains and the sea in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and spends her days writing for children and young adults to help her readers--and herself--make better sense of the world we all live in. She is co-author of the Two Truths and a Lie series and author of several award-winning nonfiction books, including: the Meet Your World series; Be a Changemaker, a teen guide to saving the world; and Emmanuel’s Dream, a picture book biography about Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, which was the recipient of the Schneider Family Book Award and was named an ALA Notable Children’s Book and a CCBC Choice, among other accolades. - Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2015Gain a new perspective on overcoming obstacles by reading this biographical book about Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah.
Born in Ghana with a deformed leg, Emmanuel was considered “useless” and “a curse,” but not by his mother, Comfort, who “had faith.” She uses tough love to show her son that he can be independent.
When Emmanuel loses his mother as a teenager, he is determined to honor her by showing everyone “that being disabled does not mean being unable.” Emmanuel organizes and completes a 400-mile bike ride across Ghana to bring attention to the difficulties the disabled in the country face. “The young man once thought of as cursed was becoming a national hero.”
The mixed-media illustrations transport you to Ghana and burst with as much faith as Mama Comfort. You can’t help but be inspired by this book.

It’s important to read books like this to increase my children’s knowledge and appreciation of the greatness that resides in people of African descent and to be proud of their heritage. Representation matters!

Fantastic book - colourful, inspiring, true. Children at my school pass this to each other with an exhortation to, "read this, it's amazing".
The true story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah who with only one leg cycled around Ghana to improve attitudes to disability is a tale worth sharing.
