Originally a special for HBO, this Jim Henson production (he also directed) was one of the first real forays into the more realistic, less vaudevillian direction for the Muppets. It also included Frank Oz (Muppeteer), Paul Williams (songs), and Jerry Juhl (script), some of the "Muppet Show"'s usual suspects. Emmet Otter and his jug band are trying out in the local talent show, but they face fierce competition from a gang of toughs, the Riverbottom Gang and their rock band. Perhaps the most notable thing is the creation of a sense of poverty and want that suffuses the little production. I, too, saw this show when it first came on TV. Not being very adept with the VCR, we managed to get it taped and I played it over and over. Then the tape finally gave way. My son gave me the new retail tape sometime back and I had forgotten about it, until, this past September when our 2 year old grandson was visiting from another state and we went through the videos and "Otter" was found. He called the video "Otter", so who's to argue with him. He had us play that video over and over and over again. I told him I would send a new video to his home when he leaves. Well folks, I ordered it and my big mistake was opting for standard shipping. All day, every day he kept asking him Mommy (our daughter) where "Otter" was and, of course, driving her crazy. So here we go with generation #3, loving "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas" and it's just as wonderful as it was the first time it was heard and seen.

I loved this Muppet production the first time I saw it on TV. The song Emmet and his mom sing for his late Dad, "When the RIver Meets the Sea," is the one I hope people will sing at my funeral.

About ten years ago, the AFI theater in Silver Spring (a Maryland suburb of Washington) actually showed this movie on a big screen with big speakers. It was just wonderful.

One of the most delightful made-for-television Christmas stories ever produced and released and I'm especially pleased that it's now available on DVD.
For those of you not familiar with the story, Emmet Otter and his single mother are struggling to survive, with Emmet doing odd jobs and his Ma taking in laundry. Separately they each secretly decide to enter a Christmas Eve talent contest -- Ma with her beautiful voice and Emmet organizing a Jug-Band. Both must compete against the Riverbottom Gang's wild electric band made up of the Riverbottom Gang.
A joyous Jim Henson musical production, narrated by Kermit-the-Frog.
I especially recommend this for all ages, elementary school youngsters through senior citizens. After viewing this story of Emmet and his mother you'll be in the mood to celebrate Christmas.

A priceless, magical gem of Christmas spirit! Jim Henson pretty much nailed it with this one. Yeah, it's a little corny, but the show is filled with great characters (my favorite is Wendell) and infectious little songs. How can you hear "Momma's Barbecue" and not go around humming it all day? It's a cold, cynical person who cannot derive some joy from this video. This is especially good for little-little kids, even toddlers. They may not understand the concepts, but they *love* the music. At least my toddler did. Of course, this means that in February, with Christmas long behind us, we're STILL watching Emmet. : ) Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this video!
