I didn't give this book 5 stars only because of the pain in my heart came out so violently. First through the stories of the children and overall with the pain and growth of the author. I am writing this after a tumultuous night and it is still the middle of the night.
This book really hits the nail on the head about abuse across the spectrum. It is empathetic and descriptive without being gratuitous.
I recommend this to anyone who has felt abused or knows someone who has been.

Emotional Orphans is a well-written memoir, at times laugh-out-loud funny, touching, or sad. The narrative is framed around tales of souls lost and recovered--those of her young patients as well as the author's. "We have a duty," Cate Sheppard says, "to follow wounded children wherever they need to go to heal themselves." She takes readers along for the ride, to a sandbox playroom where a child acts out a trauma that occurred at so young an age he has no words for it, watching some of the `Snotrockets' as they perform a psychodrama to exorcise a young girl's demons, and down a desert canyon to perform a Wiccan healing ritual. Throughout, the book shows the horrors some parents inflict on their children and the horrors sometimes perpetrated by an over-taxed and under-funded mental health system on those same children. While depressing at times, the ultimate message of the book is that it is possible to survive physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. The key to survival is forming a connection with a caring person. In a series of individual stories, Cate Sheppard shows that a caring connection is the essence of successful therapy. The book should carry a warning label: readers of this book are liable to empathize with the author and her patients to the extent that they will cry, and cry out in anger. More than engaging the reader, this book will sear your soul with its tales of personal tragedies and triumphs. Highly recommended.

I am a psychologist who works clinically with adults, not children. Yet, I could not put this book down. I was fascinated and moved by her stories, and I became inspired to think differently about some of the work that I do with adults. And I could not put it down because it is so well-written. It is creative, compelling, written like a novel. It covers themes related to the anguish of being a marginalized child. An undertone of the book is a plea for a more just and sensitive world for "our" children (which means a more just an sensitive world for us all. Whether you are a clinician, educator, activist, parent or concerned citizen this book will move you, inspire, teach you. It did all those things for me.

I was astonished at how these children could still change after the horrible things they had been through. As someone who is not in the mental health field and has only taken a basic psychology course, I still found this a fascinating read. I told my psych major friends about it and they loved it as well. I'm glad someone is able to work in this field, maybe the author has prevented several future criminals from going into a life of crime.

Other reviewers said that this book should be read by anyone who works with institutionalized children. For me, this book was personally healing. Although I have not been wounded anywhere near the level that the kids in the book have, their extreme cases helped me understand many of the detrimental things that parents do, why they do them, and the effect they can have. A great many of us have parents that bring baggage into their parenting, maybe even all of us to some degree. As children of parents with baggage, if we can understand and believe the truth about the damage that that baggage can do, to whatever degree, we can start becoming who we're really meant to be in a perfect world. So many of the things that I read about here shed some light on my own personal stuff. And even when Cate talked about her crazy boss, it was healing. Who hasn't had a crazy boss at any point in their life?

I really enjoyed Cate Shepherd's personal writing style and appreciate the genuine love that she has for the emotionally wounded in this world, of which there are so many. Bravo.

This is an excellent, engaging and engrossing book. The author's story telling abilities allow us to see these children with understanding hearts. Opening the window into her own life completes the circle. We thank her for sharing.

This is a heavy book but a definite must for anyone dealing with the same situation or even their own pain. A big thankyou to Cate for all she gives and all she does to help these children. I know she is not the only one but I wish we had many many more like her to help all the emotional orphans.

Humans can bear an incredible amount of pain if we don't feel alone with it. -- Cate Shepherd

Emotional Orphans: Children who are abused and neglected and for self-preservation have turned off their trust instincts and no longer have a connection with adults. Believing no one cares about them, they often act out either by hurting themselves or others and are often incorrectly diagnosed with behavior or mental health pathologies. This is my definition after reading Dr. Cate Shepherd's book.

I've always had an interest in psychology. I am intrigued with how people think and the ways in which our core beliefs affect our attitudes and behaviors. As an emotional orphan myself, when I discovered Dr. Cate Shepherd's poignant book Emotional Orphans: Healing Our Throwaway Children, I knew it was a book I had to read.

In Emotional Orphans, Dr. Shepherd takes us inside her thriving therapy practice and we meet several of the emotional orphans she's counseling. They start out rough around the edges, often downright scary but Dr. Shepherd is not only astute but incredibly compassionate as she wisely looks beyond the hardened facades of these emotionally damaged children in her care. Through consistent validation of not only their deepest hurts but also their dreams and gifts, she is able to break down the self-protecting barriers and get her patients to trust her and bond, often for the first time.

But if life weren't challenging enough, Dr. Shepherd must also deal with headstrong supervisors and twisted office politics and worse, her own painful past. She finds help with wise mentor Dr. Harry Young. (We should all be so lucky.
