I adored the conflation of completely deadpan, often "as you know Bob", exposition with a plotline that- while coherent in and of itself- is one of the silliest ever. The reliance of "mollusk ex machina" plot devices only points this up.
I was vastly amused throughout, and found it a page-turner as well as being both silly and funny... and we might want to add "absurd" into the mix.
I love Martinez, and this book did not disappoint me- while (as usual) being very different from his previous novels. I love that he does not fall into a rut.
I am a dear sweet little old lady, not your basic Sci-Fi reader. Well, unless it's Clarke, Asimov, or Vonnegut. But El Paso or not, Martinez
is a class act. A fine writer and one helluva philosopher. Even though he'd roll his eyes if I said that to his face, I'm sure.
"Martinez is simply in a category all his own and is the most innovative fantasy writer of the time. One thing is guaranteed, he always surprises you and never bores you, and you'll never meet the same character or the same story twice in his books.
To top it off, you get a good dash of humor missing from most fantasy work.
Mixed in with strange stories and the humor, you get asked some serious questions about friendship, family, and humanity.
This wild mix is something you don't exactly expect from an author from El Paso."
Yes. Right on!
I have mentioned this book to several friends and everyone thinks that it sounds like a entertaining book just from the title. The book is very cerebral and I did not expect the end to be what it was.
I rarely write reviews on books but this one definately warranted a review.
I keep buying copies of this book to pass out like candy!
I enjoyed this book. It's extremely light, may just a bit too light. I don't think it is the best book that I've read by Martinez but it is worth a read.
