Emperor: The Perfect Penguin is a celebration of one of the world's most charismatic creatures. In temperatures that can reach -50°C with 150km/h winds, the emperor penguins’ ability to survive and thrive is nothing short of astounding. Over the past nine years, award-winning photographer Sue Flood has journeyed to remote Antarctic penguin colonies to capture the birds in their native home.
Sue Flood's respect for her subjects emanates from every page. From the poignant sight of an egg abandoned on the sea ice, to majestic shots of emperor penguins returning from the sea and heart-warming photos of chicks clustering together for warmth, every shot explores a new angle of life in this remote and ice-crusted world.
As well as following the difficult journey of the penguins across the sea ice, Emperor: The Perfect Penguin narrates the hardships that must be endured to catch the perfect photograph. Sue's behind-the-scenes experiences prove that it is only with patience, endurance, and several thermal layers that one can capture magical moments on Earth's most inhospitable continent.

About the author

Sue Flood is an award-winning photographer and filmmaker, zoologist, adventure travel leader and public speaker. Her work takes her all over the world but she has a special passion for the wildlife and icy beauty of the Polar regions and is one of the very few women happy to return again and again to Earth’s harshest and most demanding environments.
Her first visit to the Poles happened during her 11 years in the BBC’s prestigious Natural History Unit, working on such global hits as The Blue Planet and Planet Earth, with Sir David Attenborough; on National Geographic and Discovery Channel co-productions and on the Disney nature movie Earth.
Since then, her adventures in the Arctic and Antarctic have found her camping at -40°C amid penguins, diving with leopard seals, taking trips to the North Pole aboard Russian icebreakers and living with Inuit hunters on the ice floe edge.
Sue says: “My ambition with all of my photographs and books is to let more people experience some of the world’s remotest places and to share with them the magical beauty of the landscapes and wildlife to be found there.”
Her many accolades include multiple awards in the Travel Photographer of the Year, International Photographer of the Year and International Garden Photographer of the Year competitions; the Art Wolfe (best in festival) Prize in the International Conservation Photography Awards; a Royal Photographic Society silver medal; membership of the USA-based The Explorers Club and election as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society
Sue’s travels as a photographer have taken her hundreds of destinations on all seven continents and seen her work featured in many different types of publication worldwide. She is also an accomplished public speaker, talking to audiences as varied as Bank of America teams; Lyric Opera supporters, Chicago; Whalefest, Hawaii, and the Women’s Empowerment Forum (New York). When she is neither freezing nor boiling in some far-flung location, Sue lives with her husband Chris in North Wales, UK.

Fun to see so many different shots from different perspectives // I find all 18
species of penguins remarkable and hope that a separate book is created for
each one // Now, that would be fun //
Well, I decided I couldn't bear not to own it . . .
