Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

This beautifully illustrated text reflects the latest trends in art education and demonstrates how to motivate students to learn by integrating art with other content areas. Emphasis Art, Eighth Edition focuses on the intrinsic worth of art-studio experience through its Discipline-Based Art Education approach, as well as on the process of implementing art education into classroom practice. Useful for both general classroom teachers and art specialists, this popular text promotes art appreciation while providing a wealth of creative ideas and clear technical direction, including lesson plans that incorporate instructional objectives.
Features new to the eighth edition include:

  • A new emphasis on integrating art instruction in the general classroom provides general classroom teachers with all the tools they need to include art in their daily teaching:
    • New chapter (Ch. 8) on integrating art instruction and mathematics.
    • Expanded chapter (Ch. 7) on integrating art instruction and language arts.
    • Thoroughly revised chapters on integrating art instruction with social studies and with the performing arts.
  • National Art Educators Association Standards appear on the inside front cover, with chapter correlations, so readers can readily find content relating to specific standards.
  • In the Classroom and In the Community boxes offer specific lesson plans and topic suggestions for general classroom teachers on art instruction.
  • Expanded emphasis on social and cultural issues, particularly in Chapter 9 (social studies) and Part V (Art Appreciation, Criticism, and Aesthetics), reflects the changing direction of art instruction.
  • Fine art illustrations now open every Part and an art history timeline appears on the inside back cover, reflecting an increased coverage of art history. Note: we're not sure yet if this timeline is actually going to be feasible.

I am a specialist Art teacher and this book is my bible! It is filled with beautiful photos of student work and plenty of expert advice & knowledge. It doesn't give step-by-step instructions for any of the projects, but anyone with some experience or creativity can break down how to create the amazing pieces of work by studying the photos. It is inspirational and the authors obviously know their stuff. I highly recommend this book.

This book is very useful for classroom teachers that need some ideas for incorporating Art into their curriculum. I enjoy that there are special chapters for Math, Science etc and that there are special chapters for clay, crafts, painting, etc. Great book to have as a reference.

I purchased this book while attending college for elementary education. It is informative. When trying to develop an after school art program I reached for this book first, but found it did not meet the needs of an art class. This book is good to use when you are trying to figure out how to do art projects that will reinforce a lesson plan. It is not a good resource for teaching art as an art instructor.

I found this book to be a great help in designing my art curriculum for the upcoming school year. With information and resources based on the many facets of art education (artists, mediums, styles, etc.) and grade-specific information, this book is an excellent resource for any art teacher (and even grade teachers seeking ways to tie art into their lesson plans).

My only complaint would be that there is no "school-wide" art program discussed. With budgets for non-core classwork diminishing yearly, art teachers are often forced to use only the resources at hand. I teach art at a K-6 elementary school and, since we rely totally on volunteers (parents), I have to create lesson plans that can be done in 1-2 hours a month and spans the entire school population. Which means the first graders are doing the same project as the sixth graders! I would love to have seen more student-based (instead of grade-/age-based) materials.

That said, I've gleaned several ideas and concepts for the upcoming year. The mural project alone is worth the price of this book!

This is a slightly updated version of a book I used when getting my Masters in Art Education. The lessons are serious, yet engaging for students. The descriptions are very good and the products the students produce (they work very hard and intensively when given a serious art project) are awesome.

It's a reference book I'll never part with.

Emphasis Art is packed with art projects for K-6th grade, and includes grade-level sequential curriculum for each grade. This resource will be used for weekly art projects in my elementary classroom. If you want to do an occasional art project you can flip through the pages and pick an idea, while tailoring it to your grade level. Most of the materials are basic...crayons markers construction paper, but I was inspired to buy brayers, ink, Craypas, etc. If you buy this book you will find the best prices at Amazon.com While searching bookstores I realized this is a college textbook and costs 55.00-100.00. At Amazon.com I paid 4.95 for the book and 3.99 shipping. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!
