The twenty-first century has witnessed the rapid hardening of international borders. Security, surveillance, and militarization are widening the chasm between those who travel where they please and those whose movements are restricted. But that is only part of the story. Essential Reading on the Global "Border-Security-Complex".

Empire of Borders is a great introduction to the Border-Security-Complex, an overlooked aspect of the U.S. Security State and Military-Industrial-Complex. It is an extension of American Empire most people are unaware of. The author has traveled to many of these far-flung outposts of empire and visited the trade shows and conferences where the border security regimes are bought and sold.

Apart from learning about the surprising number of U.S. agencies that operate this global border security force and have offices from the Americas and Caribbean to Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, it is interesting to learn that the approach to border policing has always been bipartisan.

One of the most shocking parts of the book is learning about the global inequalities between the halves and have-nots and how these "border sets" are coming together in different regions of the world to form a whole. Essentially, transnational capital is creating a global system which allows the wealthy the free ability to travel while creating a caste system for the poor and preventing their movement (e.g. Global North vs Global South)...something now being accelerated by new travel restrictions and regulations as a result of the pandemic.

A highly recommended book!
