Empire of Gold is not full of interesting historical facts about an Empire of Gold. It does have several characters that lack development. The characters race around the world with a flip of a page doing things with little, if any, discussion about just how they are able to accomplish these incredible feats of investigatory work which the author uses to bring you to the 'Empire of Gold'. An example of the cookie-cutter character development: a South American guide that is a cross between Dudley-do-Right and Charlie Chaplain - and he's comically fat to boot - two pages with this guy in the story and I was already sick of him. The main male character's English heritage is so painfully written that I don't even believe the author believes he is from Britain; I kept expecting a tumultuous event that exposes him as an actor playing the role of an Englishman. Hints of past fanfare and important contacts are mentioned and surround the developmentally challenged characters; the author nonchalantly puts no less than the President of the U.S. as a minor bit player. The book goes on and on like this from the first chapter.

IF you like Clive Cussler books AND have read them all AND just need another like it - this book isn't nearly as good but will suffice until Clive prints another. (I do not like Cussler books. He is one of the strange authors whose books are better as a movie than a good read.)

Recommend getting this book at the Library. If you got this in an airport and have nothing else to read for several hours, try trading with someone else or its gonna be a LONG flight. I know it's sneaky, but ya gotta do what you need to survive. Yes, I was the guy that got traded this book - and bravo to Mike on the American Airlines to LA...well played.

I really love Andy McDermott as an author. This book follows on from his other Nina Wilde stories, pretty much seems to be the female version of Clive Cusslers Dirk Pitt. The story can come across as being rather predictable, but I didn't care, enjoyed every minute of it and can't wait for the next book to arrive!

Warning!! Don't read this book just before bed! There is so much action, you'll never get to sleep !! I Loved the story and the characters. This is the seventh in a series and ended like most books in a series do....in a cliffhanger. Did not like that part. Now I've got to read the next book(which I'm happy to do) , just wish it was because I wanted to , not because I want to see the ending. Cool premise.

I read mostly for entertainment, and this series has always been entertaining. With a women as main protagonist, and her male foil not some James Bond good looking guy, I like the way his books come across. Sure, it's a little implausible, but it's entertainment. What bugs the living daylights out of me is inaccuracies. The Cessna Carravan is a turbo prop, not a piston engine aircraft. It's not that much harder to get the facts right. But I'm looking forward to the next book. Keep up the good work, Andy.

Eddie is certainly resourceful in a pinch. I seem to be reading the series in reverse order, however, each book is packed with near unbelievable action. I myself am not fond of the frequent use of deity in expletives. I find that action is just as thrilling without it and it raises the character to a more educated and refined level making them better than the average "good guy" .

I enjoyed the latest installment of the Nina Wilde and Eddie Chase Adventures. Much less pre and post marriage bickering. Cuts out the filler and adds in more killer...action, that is.

That said, if I lived in the universe of Nina Wilde, I'd lock her up and prevent her from ever finding anymore sites. They always get blown up, shot up, and almost destroyed!

So if you like crazy world spanning adventures with lots of mayhem, Andy McDermott is right up your alley!

Thanks for reading this quick review!

ps:I was sad to read one of the characters who didn't deserve to pass away, did. Not pivotal, but deserved more. Heck, I think I'm too caught up in the book :)

"Empire of Gold" by Andy McDermott is an Indiana Jones type of adventure novel where most of the activity occurs in the jungles of South America. If you like that sort of story, you will probably like "Empire of Gold". I gave to book 4 stars and not 5 because some of the action is a little too far-out to be believable. Nevertheless it was an enjoyable read.

This was the first book of Andy McDermott's that I have read. Lots of fast-moving action. It was a pleasant surprise and much better than I anticipated it would be. After I finish reading it, I sat down and ordered for more of his books. They are that good.
