The Eternal Emperor had returned at last from the dead, to pick up the pieces of his crumbling Empire. But even that great leader could not halt the Empire’s decline alone. And so Sten — master spy, military strategist, and assassin — found himself appointed Ambassador Plenipotentiary to the Altaic Cluster, where a brewing civil war threatened the stability of the Empire itself. Quelling a civil war is nothing new for Sten, but as the war intensifies, he begins to suspect that he is up against more than a mere local disturbance. Someone — operating in deep–cover and seemingly backed by the highest authorities — is working behind the scenes to manipulate events and escalate disaster. And that someone wants nothing more than to see Sten dead… --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The science part of this "Science Fiction" series is not well explained - and not really pertinent to the story line. There are several main characters and it is their exploits, some successful some not, that are developed in the books. Some of the battle scenarios are not so believable but they are fast paced and entertaining. The stories include a bit of political intrique through which we get a glimpse at the personality of the "Eternal Emperor"; hard as steel with a degree of warmth, at times.
I was looking for a fun read, with characters that are likeable and reappear in each book of the series. The stories can be categorized as space opera, though on a less grand scale than, say, E. E. "Doc" Smith. The bottom line is that Mr. Cole delivers consistently entertaining reads in this series.
The book I would give 5 stars. Unfortunately whoever converted it to digital did a very poor job of wrong words, misspelled words missing sentences missing paragraphs from the original.
After buying this in 2012, the editing problem of chapter 4 is still present. I can't believe this isn't fixed after all this time. I even contacted Allan Cole about this and he said he'd look into it. No luck. Bums me out.
Which is sad, because the Sten series is one of the best science fiction series I've read. I'll definitely be purchasing the physical book.
