I wish this book had been published several years ago when I was unhappy and unfulfilled at work (and 10 pounds heavier--it is true that unhappiness at work translates to weight and health). Had I read this book at that time, I would not have wasted 5 years in misery. I was the "Debbie Downer" at work, but have since found my calling by changing careers.
Being engaged at work makes a world of difference, and Employee Engagement for Everyone is a fast read with a powerful punch. I highly recommend this book to anyone who dreads going to work every day--Life is too short to be unhappy.
Much has been written about employee engagement as well as "personality types/styles", Kevin Kruse succinctly and simply integrates these two topics into a practical guide for both leaders and individuals. Through the use of the tools provided you can assess your employee engagement style as well as learn what triggers discretionary effort for yourself and others. Kevin provides "how to" examples that can be easily and quickly implemented. Many organizations spend thousands of dollars on employee engagement without reaping the benefits they seek. Kevin's writing reminds us if we go back to the basics by being authentic, dialoguing with each other and utilizing the engagement styles discussed, we can achieve the desired results...productive, engaged employees.
Kevin Kruse's latest book demystifies the process and cuts it into bite sized chapters. Each has a short self assessment and hints to move forward. This book is not written for professors but for supervisors/managers everywhere. It is an easy read with elegant solutions. Ignore it at your peril.
Tom Peters said it well three decades ago, "Hard is easy, soft is hard."

The concise questionnaires in Kruse's book help both employees and managers identify what is meaningful to them so they can develop a personalized engagement style. I love the quotes too. They are relevant to and reinforce the main idea in each chapter. This book also talks about an important issue in the workplace and life, that happiness is a choice! Kruse demonstrates that he can write a business book that is enjoyable to read.
Many books on employee engagement are written for management to try and design utopian workspaces - this book is a tool for the working person to take control of one's own situation at work. There are real, simple, and actionable ideas in this book that I can apply without needing my boss or work environment to change. I think that by using some of the techniques and building a pro-active relationship with my leadership, the ideas in this book will lead to me having a more fulfilling and productive work life.
I gave it 4 of 5 stars because the editing left something to be desired - there was an inconsistency or two and the page formatting sometimes was awkward. The content, however, is probably worth your time.
