Emp and best pal Ninjette exchanging costumes, to the hilarious consternation of Thugboy;
a flashback to the first time Emp became a damsel in distress;
increasingly ambiguous morality on the parts of Ninjette and Thugboy (leaving Emp the most pure-hearted character in the book);
a truly astounding scene between Ninjette and the Caged Demonwolf that will have you catching your breath (and is the best chapter of this volume). I kind of already knew CD loved his little ninja princess:
flashbacks to Ninjette's awful, abused childhood among the ninjas:
Emp learns the possible reason why she gets tied up all the time;
a terrifying ninja battle between Ninjette and those who want to enslave her that is interspersed among all the stories.
Ninjette takes center stage in this book. We learn a lot about her backstory and psychological state: it appears our Ninjette has some dark corners in her mind. Adam Warren's trademarks are strong but vulnerable women, a gonzo sense of humor, a gift for horror and suspense, and gorgeous artwork. His pencils are for me more beautiful than color comics. If you like the best in comics you really should check our "Empowered"; you'll be a fan in no time.
This really was an amazing volume. We get a deeper look into Ninjette's psyche and background here, which shows us that she's far from the cute little sidekick-type character that she initially felt like. Emp is more of a background character in this volume, which took me a while to get used to. She's easily one of my favorite characters in the series, although a volume focusing around Ninjette has been a long time coming. We get to see exactly how awful her home life was, which was pretty awful. We also get a brief look into Oyuki's past as well, and let's just say that she had it pretty bad as well.
I have to say that my absolute favorite chapter in this book had to be the bath scene between the Caged DemonWolf and Ninjette. It's probably one of the most tender scenes I've seen in the series so far, not to mention a little romantic. This might be a little spoilerish, but it's revealed in the first few pages that much like the aliens in Slaughterhouse Five, the CDW is capable of viewing all of the various points in time at any given moment. What this will mean for future volumes is unknown, but I had to give Warren props for bringing this in. It's a nice touch and brings more oomph to the CDW's character.
I'm somewhat looking forward to the next volume, as it looks like it's going to bring a lot of various issues to a head.Read more ›
Well, this volume is definitely no exception in that regard. What IS something of an exception is that this volume focuses very strongly on Ninjette (or Kozue Kaburagi, as she is sometimes known), to the point that - as Emp in fact complains, or actually DOESN'T complain, just in a slightly passive-aggressive way - the title character is effectively reduced to co-starring in her own book. See, the ENTIRE Ayakami ninja clan is coming after our beloved 'Jette, and they're most definitely out for blood. Without getting into spoilers, suffice to say that if you liked the previous ninja fight from... uh, whichever earlier volume that was (5?)... then you're DEFINITELY gonna dig this volume. Plenty of the ol' ninja ultraviolence here, with some (disturbing, effed-up) backstory for 'Jette mixed in. And all that takes up plenty of room, though not so much that Emp doesn't get some screen time (and even a bit of potentially significant personal development) of her own, too.
Oh, and don't worry - the saucy, sexy bits still find room too. ;-)

Empowered is an excellent work by Adam Warren... the character is grounded and this is easily my favorite Dark Horse or even US-printed comic series in 10 years. Read morePublished 23 months ago by Christopher Bolton
I love Empowered's art style, action, erotic shenanigans, and most of all, its humor. This is a fun series for those old enough to enjoy it's mature sexuality and humor. Read morePublished on March 12, 2014 by Chad

I like how Emp is starting to gain some recognition as well as some confidance. I also like how ninjette's past was explored. Read morePublished on August 23, 2013 by BookConnoisuer
