In a post 9/11 society, natural and human-made disasters force the wisdom of preparedness. Examples of survival and death show over and over that those who are prepared for unwanted events fair a better chance of surviving and maintaining a higher quality of life post event than those who do not prepare. Advice about preparedness often focuses only on material and physical aspects, such as "get this" and "stock up on that" or "if someone does this you move like that" etc. Less often is the crucial aspect of mental and emotional preparedness thoroughly addressed. In this, Empowered Living: A Guide to Physical and Emotional Protection excels!
Empowered Living emphasizes the principles that lay behind defensive techniques. This knowledge can be immensely valuable. Individual self defense moves are often only applicable to the situation they were designed to counter. If the principle that lies behind defensive techniques is understood, then that principle can be applied to multiple situations. To understand a principle means one can create appropriate techniques "on the spot" to deal with a dangerous situation rather than having to memorize multiple techniques that might be effective in that situation. The fewer the number of things one has to think about during a dangerous situation, the faster one can respond.
I've trained and studied multiple martial art systems for over two decades. The essential information and advice contained in Empowered Living took years for me to be exposed to or come across. Take advantage of the wealth of information that the clear, sensible, knowledgeable, and kind voice of Tori Eldridge communicates!
After glancing through a few pages I found that I just couldn't put it down so I went ahead and bought it.
Now when I think of self defense I immediately picture the Karate Kid, Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris or Steven Segal. I think I was so conditioned by movies and TV to think about physical assaults that it never occurred to me that emotional attacks over a period of time could cause equal or greater danger and pain.
This book really opened my eyes on a very personal level. I must have read it cover to cover several times. And then an amazing thing started to happened. For the first time in my life I realized I was allowing myself to be an emotional victim! In my job and in my home I was ever so slowly giving up my power.
It was a slow erosion of personal responsibility and I allowed it to happen becaus it allowed me to exist in a false state of comfort. There was great security in feeling that certain aspects of my life were out of my control. I was content because if I was a victim then nothing was my fault! Not my boring job, not my nasty neighbor, not my overweight, out of shape body.......nothing! What could I do? I was just playing the lousy cards I'd been dealt.
Now I know it may sound strange, and I'm not even sure how it happened but something in this book really got inside my head. It somehow woke me up. And it did more that make me want to change. It's made me realize that I can change. It made me realize that I already have within me, the power to change.
I hope a lot of women get the chance to read this book. I highly, highly reccomend it.
