How do we differ from the competition?
Emprum's UltiMate GPS provides a real 5Hz location update rate for app store apps. The competition may claim a 5 or 10Hz update rate, but only works at 1Hz with app store apps. The UltiMate GPS also uses a dependable and proven GPS engine that is known for its high accuracy and fast lock times.
The receiver comes with the free UltiMate GPS App available on the App Store with which you can fully control your receiver, including its LED indicators. The UltiMate GPS App provides compass and satellite views, satellite signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), firmware updates and more.
Visit the Emprum website for full product and user manuals for the UltiMate GPS receiver and the UltiMate GPS App, and for drivers for your PC.
This receiver is enabled to use AGPS data (available from the UltiMate GPS App) for even faster cold start lock times down to 15secs. The receiver is designed around a well-proven MTK chipset that has 51 satellite tracking channels and that is DGPS enabled (SBAS, WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS) and the receiver retains most recent satellite data after power-off.
The included USB cable with quick-connect button is custom designed by Emprum and allows for a full 2.1A charging current (which is e.g. required for your iPad).
This receiver works on all iPod touch models (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation), all iPhone models (iPhone,iPhone 3G and 3Gs,iPhone 4 and 4S) and all iPad models (iPad,iPad 2,iPad 3) as well as your PC.
Note: This receiver does not provide internet or WiFi access and is best used with applications that do not require a continuous internet connection.

Latest iPhones and iPads come with reasonable internal GPSs. Good enough for doing some Google Maps or other navigation. These internal sensors are not leading edge in terms of quality and update rate when it comes to more specific, or more demanding scenarios - like data recording in a car. In addition to this, there are iPods and some iPads not featuring internal GPS - another situation you may think about an external GPS like the UltiMate GPS.
I've tested almost all solutions in the market and found the UltiMate GPS lately. This is clearly the most thoughtfully designed device I've seen. As the only external devices certified by Apple featuring 5 Hz update rates, it has a unique position currently. From a form factor, it fits very well to the iPhone4. As all this small gadgets, you certainly need to take care not to handle the micro USB too rough, but it is best in class again.
Receiver quality is very high, and at high accuracy once the first fix is obtained (which takes longer than the internal AGPS for all external devices).
Support is responsive and of high quality, you will talk to the developer himself most of the time.
Strong recommendation - especially compared to the other similar sized dongles in the market.
P.S. I'm not a native speaker, so forgive typos / grammar.
Prior to receiving the unit, I downloaded the app specifically for it. The day I received the unit, the app updated itself. I then plugged the unit in and immediately the app pushed a firmware upgrade to the unit. I also pushed fresh AGPS data to it. Initially the unit took a couple minutes to lock onto the satellites, just as the manual said. Once done, I had plenty of satellites. Susequent warm and hot restarts were very fast. The unit also has a small internal battery that helps maintain its data. That charges very quickly. The unit itself does not block access to the headphone jack on the bottom of my iPod Touch. The unit has a couple of multi-colored lights for various states of charge and satellite acquisitions status. It is tiny and light-weight. I do not have a hard case yet, so I don't know which ones would or would not work the this unit.
Once satellites were locked, the unit was able to supply GPS data to any app that needed it. I tried it with several GPS programs including Latitude and Google Maps and it was fine. Sensitivity was good enough to pull a GPS lock inside my house.
One thing to remember - if your tablet or phone lacks a built-in compass, this GPS will only give you a compass reading when you are moving.Read more ›
The only thing I do not like about it is that it doesn't use a traditional mini usb cable for power.
I'm not sure if its the same with every GPS program, but with CoPilot Live Premium on the iPad, I had to make sure the Emprum app was closed, otherwise CoPilot wouldn't recognize that I had a GPS at all. As soon as I closed the Emprum app, BOOM, great GPS signal and everything worked fine.
If you are getting this to have navigation in your car, make sure you get a program that has offline maps, like CoPilot. I first tried Motion X GPS Drive because of the great reviews. Well, if you are like me and have a device that doesn't have a 3G signal, Motion X Drive won't work because it updates the map in real time. You MUST have a program with "offline maps".
It is fast re-locking onto the GPS signal, especially when switching apps. Typically it only takes a few seconds to re-lock. Another nice feature is that if the USB cable is plugged in, the GPS engine stays while switching apps and there is no need to re-lock at all. Another feature that I like is The UltiMate GPS unit works on my laptop computer over USB.
It looks very nice and very easy to see indicator lights on the front.

Don't buy. Did not work at all. Did all the logical things, restarts etc. Keep going into its data upload mode and would stay there for hours. The website was no help either. Read morePublished 15 months ago by Ricko
