The thing that bothered me about the story was her lack of relationship with Lucas. Based on reading the other books I thought that she would have this deep relationship with Lucas, the only boy she loved and visa versa. However she didn't. They met too late for that to happen. There was no time for those feeling to develop. He promised her that he would make her fall in love with him and her saying that she did at the end seemed hollow. That was one of the ways that the title was fitting, that his promise was empty. It was just words, as was her claim that she did. Until the end of the story she believed that Ethan, the hero of the first two stories and her long time obsession that she barely spoke to, was the boy that she wanted. She and Lucas went on only a few dates. They did not see each other much. Lucas felt like there was too much that he did not know about her. My reaction to reading about Lucas' future was mild sadness the same as it was reading about her. She never got to experience grand passion. She never got to do more than kissing. Physically never felt anything beyond than mild pleasure. Her final days were glossed over and her death scene did not happen.
The story title felt fitting In another way as well. I felt empty after reading the story. However the feeling was fleeting, only staying with me for a few minutes after I finished the book.
Book 3 but really this can be read before book one or even after book two.
I read this book about a month ago as I beta read it and I still cant find the right words to describe how amazing this book is. If you have read the first two books then you know Emily's story - mostly.
Elle has taken a tough subject and treated it with such respect. The characters Elle has given us are so perfectly written - you laugh with them, you love with them and you cry with them ....boy do you cry.
Although my heart ached for Emily, it was shattered into pieces by Lucas - he might even be more perfect than Ethan!
I urge everyone to read these books - they are too me perfection. I wish I had an ounce of Elle's talent.
*I won this ARC from the author*
I took time away from the book before I wrote a review because I wasn't sure what to say without giving things away. The entire Promises series is fantastic and it's one I'm constantly recommending to anyone who will listen. Elle Brooks has an amazing gift. She can write a story that becomes so vivid and true that we can see and feel it. If you haven't read anything by Elle, you NEED to. But be prepared for the feels... there'll be LOTS of them!
